As my interest in it increases, I have been reading more and more about the Norinco M305. But the icing on the cake occured today when I ran into this video made by an Australian owner:

Now that I've watched both parts, I'm even more iterested in the M305 and just a bit envious of its owners.
I was impressed with the way he handled the firearm in general, as well as the way he adeptly disassembled and reassembled it with ease. And when he notices some shortcoming in something he's done, he does not hesitate to admit that rather than attempt to gloss it over with some BS.
During the video's follow-up part 2, the young man shows quite well what he and his scoped M305 are capable of doing when he fires from prone and kneeling positions. (Those shoes have just got to go, though.)
In short, watching those two videos made me want to handle and fire an M305 for myself. The videos were probably intended as merely informational rather than promotional, but the affect they had on me was most certainly the latter.
I have also been considering a mini 14, but the M305's bang for the buck is attractive. A new stainless mini by itself is going to cost pretty close to what an M305 will cost including probably 500 rounds or more of surplus ammo. It'll take me quite some time to go through even 500 rounds (unless the urge to keep loading and pulling the trigger becomes overpowering, that is).
BTW, I really like the suppressor that is being used in those videos and I wish we Canadians were afforded the same opportunity to protect our ears and limit the noise level in the nearby environment. I don't think anyone could say that that firearm is anywhere near "silent" with the silencer, but the rifle's report is appreciably diminished and to me this would make the shooting experience much more pleasant. (I would like to know how the loudness of the M305's suppressed report compares to that of say a 10/22 without any sound suppression. If the 305 is still louder than the 10/22, once again with feeling, what's the point of the anti-suppressor law?)
