Picked up my first rifle last week. A Mosin Nagant all covered in cosmiline. I cleaned it up, got some surplus ammo stamped 60/75 and took it to the range.

It was a blast to shoot. So far since I got my Pal in the new year I have been shooting a .22 and 9mm handgun. This was quite different. I only shot it from a rested position. At 25 yards it was a little high to the right, I took it out to 100 yards and got all 5 shots on a 8.5x11 piece of paper. I was aiming towards the bottom left of the paper.

Anyways, after 20 shots my shoulder was feeling the beating from the steel butt plate. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy shooting the rifle as much as my handguns, but I can't wait to get it out again. I love working the action.

Any tips or info for a noobie with a new mosin?

Let me know if you want me to twist you up a trigger spring man, no charge!

Cheers!

Welcome to the club but be careful. Those Mosins breed.
Get yourself a well fitting soft butt pad. It will make your shooting experience a lot less painfull.
Have fun

Quick, you need to get your Mosin's little sister, a SKS, with a crate of surplus ammo. When your shoulder hurts, time to switch to the SKS for a few hundred rounds. :)

Re. shoulder pain: Some discomfort with hard recoil sometimes come from imperfect shouldering. Take your time to feel the butt (I like to say that :D) on your shoulder, and you should find the right spot where it's more comfortable. But the SKS idea is also good. ;)

Where might I find a good soft fitting butt pad for it? Online stores?

Check online for outlets for the heavy wool greatcoat issued to the Russian troops. The Mosin was designed with this coat in mind as the recoil pad.... :D

Any of the slip on pads will help a lot. But there's also a sweet direct fit pad. Google for "mosin recoil pad" and suppliers will likely pop up.

The other thing is to ensure you assume a posture where the ENTIRE butt plate is making contact. If you don't do this then you'll find you get more recoil pressure in a smaller spot which makes for a rather shocky and shakey arm pretty quickly. With a full and proper butt weld into the bunched up muscle area just below your collar bone you'll find that the full length Mosin won't make your arm wobbly for quite a while or never.

see'in is how you're from the wiggity wiggity wack, how is dart and tackle's pricing on 7.62x54? I'm tempted to grab myself a nugget

You don't need a butt pad. After a few sessions your shoulder will get used to it.

Now that I own a mosin nagant I cannot understand the complaining about it being painful to shoot. I can shoot a couple hundred rounds in a go and it doesn't hurt at all.... It's more of a push than a painful feeling like shooting 00 buck out of a single barrel shotgun.

Congrats on the mosin, you chose wisely my friend:D. Try holding her tighter on your next trip out or if you want Trade-Ex Canada has pads for mosins I do believe, they're a sponsor up on top and a good bunch to deal with. Happy shooting. :ar15:

Only suggestion I can make, friend, is to very seriously look into handloading your ammo.

Surplus can be okay; it's cheaper than new factory rounds.

But that's about all it is.

And the supply WILL dry up. And it WILL get worse because the old-type corrosive primers AGE.

Lay in a bunch and swap the LOADS (powder and bullet) over to fresh-primed casings. You should notice an immediate improvement in accuracy.

Carefully bench-rested, a good MN often can shoot well under 2 inches at 100 yards and I have seen some which will halve THAT: 1 MOA.

But you will never get that with dodgy old corrosive primers....... which is what most of the surplus is loaded with.

Besides, rolling you own is a whole ball of fun, all by itself.

Most important point of all: have fun!

If your shoulder hurts while firing the Mosin simply place your purse between the buttstock of the rifle and your shoulder.

I joke! I never did get why people complained about the Mosin though. I shot two service rifle matches last year with one. Both days were 100+ rounds with 174 grain bullets. No shoulder issues. Only milsurp that has rocked me was my No. 5 enfield. .303 loads are pretty mild, but the stock design and light weight killed my shoulder.

I went with a couple of SPAM cans from Westrifle if that tells you anything. If you don't want a whole one or two cans yourself then buy one or two and sell off what you don't want to some other local Mosin fan.

For me rifle shooting of any sort is more an occasional thing. So I expect my 880 rounds to be a lifetime supply for plinking and simply some noisy big bang fun. Other than that I may buy some brass and reload some to see how accurate I can make the old girls perform.
