Hi guys,

I am new here and looking to purchase my first tactical rifle( semi-auto) in .22 rimfire that is no restricted firearm, i only have PAL license.

Is there such a rifle like that in canada that i can buy?

Thank you

Sure there are! I suggest you take some time and look around, read up in the forums. And if you don't mind me asking, why are you looking for something "tactical" right off the bat? i mean, obviously, by your question, you are very "green" when it comes to fire arms. my suggestion would be to get a decent bolt action .22 to start with, at least to familiarize youself with firearms, and safety in general. IMO, a short, semi-auto .22 lends itself to being more of an accident waiting to happen in the hands of a totally inexperienced shooter.... that's just my opinion though.

another great site for .22's and rimfire in general is rimfirecentral.com

read up.

ginnz.

The reason i am looking to tactical and semi is because i already have 5 rifles:

2 bolt actions rifle Savage mark ii in 22 LR and 17HMR
2 air rifles (1 coil spring and 1 nitro piston)
1 shotgun remington 870 express.

And now i am looking for some cool looking rifle for target shooting, i am also considering the options of getting a tactical rifle in 223 too if i can find the one i like within my budget ( max $1000).

I do like the look of the Colt M4A1, Ar15 and i did look into the Norinco CQA but that one is restricted.

By the way, a semi-auto rimfire rifle with overall length of MORE than 660 mm is not restricted right? Does not matter if it is tacital looking?

I'll chime in.
Pretty sure it's all covered pretty well in the PAL course book. Still got yours?
Also, most vendor sites here specifically say "Restricted" in the description for those items that are classified as such.

theres 2 answers to your last question: When the laws came to be, everything scary or military looking was either prohibited or restricted. The AR-15 in ANY configuration is restricted, doesnt matter if its a 7.5" or a 24" heavy barrel rifle that weighs 15 lbs. Built on an AR lower = restricted. Now the other half: New firearms that have come into the country since had to be examined by RCMP FRT lab and they have to actually follow a little bit of logic and rules when classifying firearms thus letting alot of scary looking guns in as non restricted because there is nothing about them that technically forces them into restricted or prohibited class. Now to add: you are correct about overall length for non-res must be 660mm or greater. A semi-auto center fire rifle or shotgun must have a bbl of 18.5" or greater to be non-res, anything shorter and its restricted. However manually operated action firearms and rimfire rifles (semi or not) can have a barrel at any length BUT you can only cut a factory made barrel to 457mm (17.99") any shorter and it becomes prohibited. The flip side is you can swap in a shorter barrel if it was made by a licensed gunsmith (i.e. Dlask, NEA etc.) but you cannot cut it any shorter. Again, this forces semiauto CF's into restricted but everything else only must remain 660mm or greater to remain non restricted. I know, written by an ignorant idiot but that is the law H:S:

First off, are you really planing on buying a AR-15?
Reason why I ask is you can buy a 22 conversion for the AR. Either changing out the bolt carrier or by swapping the whole upper to 22.
The good thing about this is you will have the same lower and be able to train with it as you would w/ 223 ammo. Ontop of this, the cost is the same for a complete upper as a issak mk22, SR-22 or really pimped out 10/22. You're looking at $600-$800 bucks for these guns or upper with magazines.
That being said, you won't be able to shoot the AR 22 anywhere but the range.
If you buy a 10/22, sr-22,rem 597 vtr, mk22 or mossberg tactical you will be able to shoot it on private land.
It also depends on how much you want to spend? If your cheap and don't mind plastic, the mossberg is $275-$320 and is half the cost of the sr-22 and mk22. The gun has no upgrades but comes pretty close to looking the most AR-ish. The mk22 is new and there have been alot of issues with it. The sr-22 is great but be warned, most people swap out alot of parts and spend about $1000-$1200 on the gun and parts to get it customized. Starting out with a 10/22 is also great if you plan on swapping out just about everything on the gun. The bonus is you can change it to almost anything cause it's the honda civic or rimfires.
My 2 cents, if your going to get an AR. Please buy the conversion. If not the 10/22 or mossberg is my next choice.
I own both the handle and flat top version mossberg 22 and love it but I wish I had waited till my restricted licence is sent in and bought a AR conversion.

There isn't much in the way for AR style non restricted guns for under $1000. The only choice is really the su16 and will be right around $1000 after you buy the forehand and pistol grip.

The best choice for you I would think if you want tactical and NR I would go with an sr-22.

Do you own one? If so, what have you swapped out on it and how much have you spent?
Reason why I ask if my friend looked around at all the rimfires and bought the sr-22. It didn't shoot as well as my mossy and he dropped $200 on a heavy barrel, $200 on a quad rail, $200 on 2 50 round drums, $200 murader stock. So $800 not including shipping and taxes. The gun was $600. So he spent $1400 with no optics on a rimfire.
The gun is great if you sink money into it!

who told him to start swapping parts? he did it on his own free will and now hes got a solid, well built gun that can shoot. I did something similar with an off the shelf 10/22 and NEA-22 chassis. Its rock solid, fits me perfect and is built just how I want it. The 10/22 inside is unmodified, aside from the T.I. charging handle. You can tout your plastic gun all you want but it just isnt on par with what can be done to a 10/22. Money well spent IMO. If you want quality you gotta pay up. Just dont act like someone made them swap parts out, or it was necessary or whatever. The only reason nobody swaps parts on other .22s is because nobody makes much for other .22s. 10/22s reign supreme on the tactical .22 market for a reason, Im done trying to convince the haters otherwise. OP: have fun with your thread

why would he buy a marauder stock for the SR-22?

why would he buy a marauder stock for the SR-22?

I was wondering the same thing. That and why he bought a $200 quad rail and marauder kit? I have no hate for the mossy .22 as a budget plinker that does look the part and shoot half decent but you can't seriously compare the tactical .22 to the sr22 in anyway except that they both shoot .22lr. And yes I do own both and side by side out of the box the sr is hands down the superior rifle in every category.

Basic 10/22 + Marauder kit = pretty cool looking .22 for about $550!
I'm guessing thats why he bought it. If you read my original post, I said the sr-22 is a good gun. However I just wanted to let the poster to know what he'd get into if he got an sr-22 as well as every other gun!
I can't help but comment, you sr-22 lovers haven't answered my question. Imo this speaks volumes about the gun.
So guys how much have you spent on upgrades?

The main reason why I dislike the sr-22 is because it's an upgraded 10/22 for $600. Then you swap parts out of it and it costs you more and more. I can't justify a $1200+ rimfire, maybe you guys can. For that kind of money you can buy a 10/22 and pimp it out several ways. Or buy a basic AR-15 and conversion kit and be done with it.

Question, does your sr-22 out group the mossy? Both of mine group almost an inch better than the sr-22 at 50yds.
