Ralph (Martini gunsmiths http://www.martiniandhagngunmakers.com/ )
was at the range today. So after an AWESOME Pistol Silhouette shoot, I asked to tag along and watch the Master Gunsmith with his latest creations let off their leash.

Well, the falling Block 300 Winmag was awesome, as was the 6.5x55 falling block, as well as the 7.62x54 Mauser actioned rifles. Scopes off and express leaf sights were sighted and drifted into place.

Now that that work was done, he asked me and another fellow to get a new rifle ''on paper''

Well Fme sideways.... This was the biggest Mauser action I have ever held. Rifle wasn't more than 12lbs though. Oddly enough, I thought Ralph had made a bolt action slug gun. The hole was effen monstrous!

so, this client wanted a 585 Nyati. Suffice to say that I fired 2 rounds with the express sights, and it makes a 300 win mag, 338 Lapua Mag, and 577NE feel like mousefarts in comparison.

I actually have a bruise on my shoulder! (I never bruise!!!)

Ahh, what a great day, and the video is awesome. Pics of the ammo are equally impressive. I'd post a few pics, but I am too darn tired to create a photobucket account.

600 grain bullets at 2400fps..... NASTY!:D

All in all, I handles more than 120,000 of his firearms today. Beautiful. I so want one. Anyone need a kidney? 12,000.00 should almost get me a rifle......

Beware of retina damage! I've read about it in other threads. Sounds like it is very real! I'm in the candy ass catagory, I draw the line at 30-06, although I have fired my oldest son's 300 Wby mag in his Ruger No.1, a few times, didn't flinch :)

There's one on the EE for around $8000 if I recall,.........and you just know it hasn't seen that many rounds! :D

My .375 blurrs my vision and bruises my face. It's too nice to sell, but I don't take it out often.

I let a young guy at the range shoot my 458 Lott last time I was at the range. He smiled ear to ear and said "yeah, she kicks a bit"

I'm not sure I'd want shoot the Nyati

12 lbs seeems a bit light for a .585, only a small percentage of people can actually handle a rifle like that.

It's lighter than my Savage LRPV and Sightron scope combo.

Well. The light bruising is gone. Wow, what a wallop that thing packs. I believe the client is planning to have a muzzle brake fitted.

Talk about mind-numbing recoil. Even with the pansy-pad of 7lbs of lead shot behind the butt of the rifle.

Did you shoot it standing or off a bench / rest?

The only way to shoot those are with a standing style rest or freehand.

There are people that simply like to own the most punishing rifle. Period. Those are the same people that like to make snide comments about 'recoil wimps'.

On AccurateReloading, there are many MANLY MEN, who handle the recoil of these monsters, as easily as we would a .30-06 (according to them anyway).

Nothing I own, or will ever own, is close to cannons like that Nyati or T-Rex.

What the hells the point in owning a powder pig like that?

The original idea was to use them for rooting pachyderms out of the really thick brush they retreat to
(and charge out of) after you plink at them with
little guns like 470's and such.

Shot off a high front bag. Pansy pillow of lead shot to distribute recoil force.
Light bruising is gone today, but my shoulder feels somewhat tender. Guess i am not manly man enough ;)

I've shot a few rifles here and there. And this one tops them all. A 300 win mag can be mildly unpleasant, but the proper term for this kind of recoil is ignorant.

That said, I have had the misfortune of shooting a rifle not held properly and it smarted like hell. When i first shot the Nyati, I braced fully and thought I could handle it no problem. I was sooo wrong. So the next shot, I gripped the forestock in an iron grip and tensed up and bore into the stock as much as possible. Even at that.... The wind is quite literally knocked out of you.

Strangely enough, the report on firing is not bad at all. Very low frequency 'whump' compared to the whipcrack of a smaller bore cartridge.
