Is the .308 dead???

With guns I like 30 cal.

With women I like blondes.

With sheep I like Dorsets.

What I do with each of those is personal preference, speaking of ### ed.

Well now, I just don't know what to say!

1. no arguement with 30 cal :)

2. women with black hair, make real wood for me! :D past experierences for me shows that some blondes can't chew gum and shoot at the same time! :(

3. sheep, sheep? no idea, not into that sort of thing! ovrec

We haven't even fully buried the Krag yet, the very first US 30 cal military cartridge and the '06 is as healthy as it has ever been so the chances of the latest US military 30 cal dying in the next hundred years or so are about ZERO.
Some trivia about the 7.62 Nato/7.62 X 51mm/308 Win.
It was designed in response to the military wanting a shorter actioned and lighter battle rifle.
Bulk and weight of amunition was also a primary concern for machine guns.
It was designed for the use of all NATO countries many of whom wanted a shorter lighter cartridge than the '06 and the actions in which it came. Many wanted 7mm or 8mm or even 6.5mm but the US military machine bullied them into the 30 cal.
The 7.62 NATO as designed would and was intended to headspace and fire in all military 30-06 rifles including bolts, semi autos (Garand) and full autos, a criteria the military insisted on so their supply of weapons would not be rendered immediately obsolete.
As with all military cartridges, hunting of big game animals is not their first or last design criteria, but most end up being adequate, if not ideal, for the task of hunting and the 308 is no exception.
Is it dead or dying?
If you look at caliber offerings world wide, from all the gun manufactures I think you will find it ranks number 1 or 2 if my statistics and memory serve me correctly

The first center fire hunting rifle I bought was a 30-06 and that was 20 some years ago. I never felt a need to replace it with something smaller. I did build a .257 Roberts AI that I can use for deer instead if I want to, but it was intended for coyotes.

Too many choices and most people are looking for something spicier than the "vanilla" .308, 30-06, or .270 cartridges.

If I could only have 2 rifles they would be a .308win and a .375H&H.
If I could only have 1 rifle it would be a 30-06 because "there ain't nothing you can't fix, with $100 and a 30-06".

The .308 is more case efficient, and inherently just "slightly" more accurate then the 30-06. Plus you can use a shorter action in a .308 rifle.

Both are excellent hunting cartridges. If you prefer "slightly" more hitting power then by all means get the 30-06 but I can't see where that'd be needed very often.
