M2A1 Halftrack Resto dialup beware

Well not much has been done. Got all the drums off. Looks like the front Diff was NOS like i was told. Brakes, bearing etc were all new. I still replaced the front wheel cylinders as they had left over brake fluid crud in them. The rears were totally rusted, needed everything. The bearings on one side were perfect, but other had some light black/scuffing, so they are to be replaced. Also pulled the rear diff. Not a happy sight, but after talking to a few guys who have these they say not bad at all. I still took it into my drivetrain guy to have him pull out the side bearings to make sure they are ok. Not looking to blow a rear diff with tracks at 30-40 mph lol

Still bolting all the little brackets and replacing nuts bolts on the frame before painting.

Im also told my rear floor is done at the fabricator and hes doing some extra pieces for me.

Pics of rear brakes before/after
Also that hammer in the background is a full size hammer, not a kids toy, just to give an idea as to size

To the OP:

Do you think you'll have to replace those gears or will they clean up?
Is that some sort of locker set up on those rear gears?

I bet you're glad you can remove that 3rd member to access the ring and pinion! Sure beats having to take that whole rearend out of the chassis!

Looks like a rockwell. Do you know if it is? Lots of parts available and aftermarket support for Rockwells.

AdrianM,
The gears and pinion will clean up fine im told by a few sources, and yes the pumpkin design is great. The front diff is another story, it splits in half. I'm not even going to attempt opening it up.

Hawkshadow,
yes blasted them, por 15'd the backplate. To remove the drum i used a motorcycle lift, alot easier to remove, and install

the rear diff on my 46cj2a looked like that

i drained it hosed it out with brake parts cleaner let it dry, filled it and spun it around by hand to coat everything with oil left it for a week did it again.

I eneded up draining it and refilling a few times looks like new now

as long as the bearings are not rusted it should be ok

and they tell me i can get insurance for her. Yay

Try getting insurance for a 5 ton truck to tow your RV with. I think that it would be easier to get insurance for the half track. Nice project, am glued to this thread.

Yes, i have a guy who does all my drivetrain work for my customers and myself. I use to do it but just don't have all the tools any more to keep up with changing times.
He told me he wasn't bothered by the rust, and in the end said only one side bearing had to be replaced due to minor black pitting, which was available from his supplier

Did you send the pumpkin out then?

Claven2, you make me laugh. More pics this week. I have to get the pumpkin today or tomorrow and will shot some pics

Coyote Ugly, the CI is around 386 and HP is 147. Lifting just the engine alone lifts my rear tires on the bobcat so it must weigh around 1600 with all acc. Mileage is 3mpg

An engine like that is all about torque.
