Rechambering a 9mm makarov to 9mm x 19 Luger

too much cartridge for too little gun, believe it or not- the mak 9x18 is in the realm of the 380, a MUCH inferior cartridge to the 9mm- i know it's only a millimeter in case length, but the difference in performance is remarkable

The Makarov pistol is a blowback action. The Mak cartridge is pretty much the most that they can handle safely. The 9x19 generates too much pressure for a normal blowback pistol.
Having said that however, therre are some other blowback pistols chambered in 9x19.

Yes, there are 9P blowback pistols but, as far as I know, none currently in manufacture.

Most common example is the ASTRA 600 produced for the Luftwaffe, nearly 70 years ago. It is a big, heavy gun which is a VERY long way from being a small pocket-size model such as the Mak.

1903 Belgian/1907 Swedish were blowbacks, too, chambered a short 9mm round which was CALLED the 9mm Browning Long. You make it from .38 Super and trim to 18mm. Yes, it is the same length as the Mak round but it uses a .010" smaller-diameter bullet. BOTH are relatively mild rounds.

Pressure on the 9P runs as high as 36000 psi: well into the range of many rifles. It is NO round for any pocket-pistol. If it had been developed in the USA rather than in Europe, likely it would have been called the ".357 Short Rimless Magnum"...... which is exactly what it is.

Best deal is to get some Mak brass and a .365" mould and roll your own.

More fun, anyway.

there is a 9x19 mm Makarov. but it is designed differently. it has spiral flutes in the chamber . it try s to torc out of your hand when fired .at least two of these pistols were imported to Canada.

Much easier to re-chamber to .380 ACP than 9x19 .....

yes, but you still run into the bullet flaw- the mak uses a 361 bullet and the 9mm "family" uses a 355- so you're going to have 6 thou of "slop"- that's why the dealer ( i forget who) offers it in TWO chamberings- the 380 and the 9mm x18 mak- it may be a simple barrel swap, like it is with the tok

Since OP hasn't said and no one has asked, I will. Why does OP want to change anyway? Ammo can be bought or reloaded for the Mak. I load for mine using cut down 9x19 brass and Berry's plated bullets. It runs 100% with this combo and the cost is reasonable compared to commercial ammo.

doing stuff like this is why guns blow up and people get hurt

DO NOT RECHAMBER IT TOO 9mm x19 "the slide is not heavy enough for this" in a blow back design the slide/bolt weight keeps the action locked til the chamber pressure is at a safe level.

The mak ammo is about the same a .40 and I was hoping for something cheaper like 9x19.

Sounds like a tok TT-33 in 7.62x25 would be a better choice for my combloc fix, because the ammo is cheap and so is the gun less than $500 with a few mags a over 2k of ammo.

Thanks for the help.
