UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

Sorry, but the actions too short.

only by an 1/8th of a inch .........

i've had my rifle apart more than a few times trying to figure it out ... it is so close that the tallented guys at the factory who build these should be able to figure it out ......

that said i can see no reason why they are not chambering the ranch hand in 454 casull ..... unless there factory is already at capacity producing what they are offering already .

I called Steve's Gunz to see wher my scout mount is for my ranch hand
I had a nice chat with Steve's wife she said thay have bin getting a lot of orders from Canada.
I told her it is becaus of gunnutz so naw thay ar going to join gunnutz and get in the fun

Ha I was just talking to Steve yesterday about random things, he called to Chat about the 500$ export thing. Anyone know if that's done deal yet or not?

EDIT: Apparently the exemption only applies to accessories and parts to support a previously licensed shipment. So no :)

Steve is a great person to chat with, a wealth of knowledge on the old Winchesters and rossi clones

Finsally got Steve's peep sight and front fiber optic mounted solidly so its off for sighting in this weekend.

I've also bought the holster that Wanstalls sells and one item that I would like to see on it are a couple of cartridge loop rows on the outside of the holster. this would make it really useful for "grab and go". Anyone know who the manufacturer of the holster is?

I'm unsure of the maker, but Gary's site describes these holsters as
custom, build to order (and allow about 5 weeks delivery) and that
they are made by a BC saddle maker. Click on the Mares' Leg holster
on Wanstalls site and up will come an order tool so you can option
the puppy to your own specs.;)
You can bet that the leather will be good & heavy duty.

thanks Shellshucker i have the holster ( agree it's great heavy duty leather) already - looking for loops to be added to the body of the holster.

Checked Okanaga leather website thanks Gotrek -shows magnificent examples of holsters he's done. Unfortunately the website says he's retiirng and not takling any more orders :unhappy:

I have bin tempted to go bear hunting but think I will hold out till deer season
With the full stock the ranch hand is just crying to go hunting

Range report on my two new RH sights ...

OK OK ... it's not a range report. I spent an hour on my back deck just before supper ... shooting at a couple of fresh 2" targets taped onto a huge Cabelas carton about 15 m away. Shot about 25 rounds ...

I thought that I'd traded-off the gun, but it was returned.

The front sight had been replaced with a Steve's Gunz (Marble's?) marginally-higher fiber-optic front sight, and the rear sight had been replaced with a Skinner's Sights rear peepsight mounted on the RH barrel.

First reaction ... the Skinner's peepsight was useless until I screwed-out the aperture and turned it into a ghost-ring sight. Much better ... when the gun was extended (not the way a typical rifle/carbine is held ... on/near the cheek) the tiny aperture almost filled/framed the "sight-picture" ... so it got quickly removed. A tiny point of light 24" from your face ... with no image inside it? Yikes.

So I started shooting. At 15 m (this was not purchased as a hunting firearm) everything was about 6" too high and about 1.5" to the left. I loosened the set-screw on the Skinner's peepsight and rotated the peepsight into its lowest position ... where it should have been from the get-go. Much better ...

The firearm was now producing 1.5" groups about 1" to 1.5" high. OK ... no more adjustments to fix that, but it's close enough.

A little gentle tapping back-and forth ... totally trial-and-error ... (on the well-supported rear sight) with a proper plastic/rubber tapper from Princess Auto on a short piece of hardwood dowel ... and voila ... close enough.

After reading so many interesting and enthusiastic posts about this gun, I need to consider one. I have no commitment to calibre but I am inclined to .44 magnum. Help me decide please.

what caliber are you using Boomer? I have the same fiber optic sight as you and Steve's rear peep and mine's in .44 mag - I tested with factory loads. I went through the same experience you did with respect to the aperture- much faster without, although i could still see through the aperture and the groups were smaller, but it was a bit slow for bush hunting in my view. I found I was dead on with only 1 turn up adjustment from the bottom on the peep -now ghost ring - at 25 to 40 meters - so have lots of elevation adjustment room for longer distances.

Will be making up some stiffer loads - 300 gr hardcast and H-110 that I have lots of -and it'll be interesting to see if it behaves like a rifle (point of impact up with more velocity) or a pistol ( point of impact down with more velocity).

KeltecFan

I went with .357 mag due to ammo cost, 38 sp is a cheap plinking round compareidly to .44 or the .45
