Greatest Black Rifle Innovation in the Last Decade

How old are you?

Red dot sights and the like have been around since the 1980's....

IMO the most significant improvements in Black rifle utilization has been the proliferation of new cartridges. My favorite being the 300 Whisper which admittedly also predates the last decade but which had not been widely used previously.

Exactly why I said "or more specifically the proliferation of sighting units like these since the War on Terror began."

But fair enough, in hindsight what I referred to is more of a revolution in black rifles, not an "innovation".

There really hasn't been anything "new" in the black rifle arena for a while. All the innovation right now is in ammunition, but even then there's been quite a bit of idea recycling.

I dunno... the ar itself was pretty innovative in itself... first gun to really take advantage of CNC machines,

built in recoil compensation is my favorite personally, even an ar 10 in .308 is like a pussy cat.

50 year old design is still proving its worth today, mainly because its machined in a way that is adaptable, the plat form can be pistol length in .22, or carbine length ect, multiple calibers, and rail systems let you put any attach ment on

Invented in the last 20 years? Not much.
Perfected or improved. I can name a few things.

Invented that only thing I can think of is. Hybrid comp/ flashiders and replacements for chromeline bores. Such as the process we use on our S&J AR15 bbls.

What's the Greatest black rifle innovation in the last decade? It could be anything, from a new component or accessory to a major advancement in rifle design itself.

I would guess it is the ease of information shared: the average joe or jane can get an AR fairy easily and with good accessability to parts and gizmos, and within a week be very confident in field stripping it, changing forearms, replacing bolt gas rings and doing the stuff they want to change on it. The Internet and the access to YouTube and other resources allows all the questions to be asked in advance if someone want to do the research.

As said before: very little big innovation in the last decade, almost everything has been making old ideas better and more accessable. :yingyang:

I would have to say "modularity". There have been advances in almost every aspect of black guns. Rails, grips, materials, muzzle devices, RDS's, Electro optics, coatings, stocks, lighting, you name it. The improved modularity and sheer number of accessories in my opinion is the game changer.

Boltgun

Electronic optics. The rifle has changed in small ways, and while they are far from meaningless, they are hard pressed to make improvements that are earth shattering over the original AR-10 and AR-15 designs.

The way that they are aimed for both short and long range shooting has changed monumentally from the traditional iron sights to Optics now. They are not a total nor complete replacement to irons, as they are subject to the life of the batteries or the fragility of glass, but they are a true revolution in the black rifle world.

Chris Costa's beard. This thread ends here.

The Armson OEG Single Point sight, circa 1970.

We're you even born then?

I actually had one of the later model versions of that sight. I loved it on my AK. That was back in the day we could take ARs and AKs out in the bush. :)

I'd agree with this. It's commented that in the 'olden days', moveable type made printed works accessible to the masses, and this information exchange fueled the renaissance, etc.

Guess much the same, and even more, could be said about the internet.

did it really take 60 posts to bring this bad boy up?
