Which Chrony to buy?

Heading into the city tomorrow and I want to pick up a chronograph. Any opinions on which model to buy? Is the basic Alpha and Beta models good enough for occasional range use? What about the F1.

I have an F1 that I paid I think $99 for. I don't know how accurate it is since I've never done a side by side with another but it is good enough for comparative results between loads.
 
For occasional use, just about any of the Chony models are fine.

One thing to understand about chronographs, it that they don't necessarily give you extremely accurate readings.

The main use for these units, is to get you in the ball park and work up consistent loads for accuracy out of a particular firearm.

You also have to understand that different lighting conditions will make a difference as well. Morning light is different from pre evening light. Bright sunlight is different from a cloudy day. Scudding rain or wind blown clouds will change readings as well.

I'm not telling you not to buy one, by all means do so. They are very useful instruments when used properly.

If you hand load, you are far better off, to load for accuracy first then check out it's velocity. The accuracy is far more important than the velocity will ever be.

If you don't handload, the chrony is a waste of money that could be better used to buy hand loading equipment or more ammunition.
 
I have a Beta model that I have used in conjunction with a Oehler Ballistic System.
It has always been with 20 fps of what the far more pricey Oehler unit reads.
I have heard some complaints about the Chrony units, but I have not experienced such myself.
Light conditions can affect any chronograph, of course.

I have an old (15 years?) red one (is that the Alpha?) and it was good until it got shot (but I got it repaired so now i have 2) and now I have a green one (F1 master) with the read out on the cable and it is great (just got back from the range now)
 
My Oehler P-35 is just perfect, i had one Chrony before, have nothing bad to say about it but if you have the means go for a Oehler... JP.
 
This one is getting good reviews and you wouldn't need to wait on the firing line to stand down in order to set it up.

I have an Alpha and it is accurate. It has been used with other more elaborate chrony's and the reading are the same. I have had it a long time and like another guy said I think it cost me $100.
 
Want the best, most accurate, consumer grade chronograph?

Kurzzeit PVM-21......Not cheap......:eek:

The Oehler is a dinosaur, great in it's day, but far eclipsed by the Kurzzeit. The Oehler runs a 4 MHz sampling rate, the PVM-21 is 16 MHz, and pro/lab models run around 40 MHz.

I have an old Chrony, still working well.

Haven't tried one, but the CED are apparently pretty good.

I just took out my beta master for the first time today. Seemed to work pretty well in full sun but will need to try it again on a cloudy day. No issues, it gave a reading for every shot from 650-2650 fps. Best part is I didn't shoot it.
 
I got the basic alpha and I find it works perfectly for my needs. Paid $100 for it. And if you find you need more features later you can add on the other goodies later
