Glass

Looking great - glad another CGN-er got the second one.

Now you need some good glass for it.

I had a VX3 4.5-14 one inch scope kicking around and tried to mount it on the rifle.

To my surprise, I found the rings are 30mm. I am not messing with the EAW rings and bases, as they are about the coolest set up in the world. Instead, I will find a scope to match the rings.

Any suggestions?

Schmidt & Bender - Wolverine has the 3-12x42 Klassic for $1450. If you want a larger objective they have the 2.5-10x56 Klassic for $1499.

Can you tell me, is that a good price? I do not know the relative values of these scopes and I cannot seem to find anyone else who sells them so that I can compare.

Thanks

Yes - those prices are even lower than in the USA. For example the 3-12x42 is US$1899 at EuroOptic.

If you are not familiar with S&B, then you should do some research - they are top notch scopes.

Alright, I will order one. I have heard of S & B, but I never saw one. I might as well give it a try it everyone likes them.

Thanks, and I will post the pic when it gets in and is mounted.

Which One?

Which one are you getting? Which reticle?

I think I will get a S&B 3-12 x 42 with a number A7.

I do not like big objective lenses, so I will go with the 42. And the A7 seems like it would obscure the target least of the available options.

Good call on the 42. 50mm objectives are pointless unless you are shooting past legal time or the magnification is up past 24X IMHO.

For those who like the Sauer 80 and would like to find one at a good price, look at Trade Ex site as they sometimes have CG 3000, which are just that, Sauer rifles in disguise.

Legal shooting time here in BC is 1/2 hour before sunrise and 1/2 hour after sunset. You will see a difference if you compare them side by side. Whether you need/want it or not is a different story. And another thing that makes a big difference in low light is the reticle.

Order In

Well, I phoned up John Hipwell and ordered a Schmidt & Bender Klassik 3-12x42 with A7 Reticle. He seems like a nice guy to deal with. I wonder how he can get S&B scopes for such a good price?

It was mailed at around 4:00 PM priority post. That sure was fast. It should be here early next week.

As to the issue of objective lens diameter, I did buy a VX-3 scope with a 50mm lens because it was on sale at WSS. But I would have prefered a 40mm lens, all things being equal.

I appreciate that a large objective lens will transmit more light. But years ago I bought a Redfield LE-12 Ultimate Illuminator. Though it was a great scope in many ways and had very good clarity, the 56mm objective lens was a terrible pain in the ass. I could never get a proper cheek weld on any rifle I owned and accuracy suffered. With scopes like that, you need an adjustable comb, like that found on a target rifle. Thus you have to build the rifle around the scope. I do not think it is worth all the trouble.

Anyways, when I get through all the spending, I suspect the Colt Sauer will never go hunting. If I scratched it, or banged it on the truck, I would probably end up drawing a warm bath and slicing my wrists.
