Any interest in handgun hunting?

I know it will never happen but would you, if it were legal, hunt with a handgun?

I'd like to try it - perhaps with a classic Model 29 Smith & Wesson in .44 Magnum. I think a 6" barrel would be ok, alough I certainly wouldn't complain if it had the 8 3/8" barrel. I believe a hard cast 300gr bullet would deal with any of our ungulates up to 100 yards or so.

What would you hunt and what would you use?

Nope.

Oh wait, HELL YES. I'd love to hunt black bear over baits with a Model 29. You can hit them with a well-thrown rock around these parts, so a .44 at those ranges (25 yards would be a long shot) would drop them like a bad habit.

EDIT: It can happen, I pester my MP regularly about handgun hunting. Enough letters to enough people and things happen. ATT's for hunting, or better yet, elimination of ATT's altogether.

Don't say never! It was only in the 70's that they stopped issuing permits, and it's not technically illegal. Some weasel words about "only at an approved range" would need to go, but that's it.

And yes, I'd be all over that. Ruger NM Blackhawk in .357 mag. would be my current gun, but if we were able to handgun hunt I'd look into getting a S&W or Dan Wesson in .41 Mag.

I have some interest. By some I mean bare minimum.

A rifle will always be superior. A .44mag is powerful in terms of handguns yet it wouldn't even come close to as effective as just about any rifle cartridge. Would you trust yourself to hit the vitals of a deer with a handgun out to 100yards? Having a .410 revolver in a holster may be useful if you happen to flush a grouse well hunting for deer. I have no idea what kind of spread or range they have though so a .22 pistol would probably be better. The only reason why I would want this to actually be legal, is so that we can legally use handguns out on the back roads with out an ATT or ATC whatever its called.

Sure why not. Pretty much the same agruments for or against handgun hunting could be easily carried over into hunting with archery gear regarding wildlife conservation. Archery hunting is well accepted in North America. It's just our society in general that needs to think outside the box.

I hope I can see us carrying handguns in the bush again (easily) in my lifetime. I cannot understand why you would not be allowed. It has been proven time and time again it is not the law abiding citizen who causes gun crimes and it is safer and handier than a long gun in certain incidences. It would be nice to have the option to shoot a snowshoe with a 22, or a deer with a 357, or a bear with a 44 mag. We all need to stay on top of our elected officials and continue to write letters.

That is just crazy talk.

If it was allowed, I would carry my Freedom Arms 83 in 454 Casull. I have seen the same gun scoped shoot as accurately as some rifles, and at 100 yards, it has plenty of energy for big game hunting.

Not necessarily true. The actual text of Section 19 of the Firearms Act says:
19. (1) An individual who holds a licence authorizing the individual to possess prohibited firearms or restricted firearms may be authorized to transport a particular prohibited firearm or restricted firearm between two or more specified places for any good and sufficient reason, including, without restricting the generality of the foregoing,
  • (a) for use in target practice, or a target shooting competition, under specified conditions or under the auspices of a shooting club or shooting range that is approved under section 29;
  • (a.1) to provide instructions in the use of firearms as part of a restricted firearms safety course that is approved by the federal Minister; or
  • (b) if the individual
    • (i) changes residence,
    • (ii) wishes to transport the firearm to a peace officer, firearms officer or chief firearms officer for registration or disposal in accordance with this Act or Part III of the Criminal Code,
    • (iii) wishes to transport the firearm for repair, storage, sale, exportation or appraisal, or
    • (iv) wishes to transport the firearm to a gun show.
The words bolded mean that the CFO can issue an ATT for any reason he/she feels is valid, not just the ones listed. We could all be carrying in the bush tomorrow if the CFO's decided to change policy and allow it.

Interesting.
Seems we need new CFOs that aren't running their own little empire.

So is it just our range ATTs that have the "approved range" bit? I can't remember.

I'd definitely give it a whirl. A nice .22 LR or WMR revolver for grouse or hare would be a good start. After that, I guess it would depend on what I could shoot accurately in a big-game hunting situation!

it is a difficult thing to get legalized because the provinces dictate what you can hunt with...I have been told the provinces won't allow it because the feds won't allow the carrying of handguns in the woods and one of the excuses the fed use is that the provinces don't allow handgun hunting so there is no point in trying to do the work to change the laws...it is a serious catch 22...I wonder which end is best to start working from...the feds or the provinces...it would be a great thing for us river salmon fishermen and bow hunters to have as an option for predator defence...it sucks having to carry a shotgun while fishing it really gets in the way and it is pretty pointless to leave it on the shore.

I would hunt grouse, rats and gophers with a nice Browning hand gun.
Or maybe an old out west replica in 22 rimfire.
Pest control if I had acreage.
That's it, that's all.

I never saw the sense in not being able to carry a holstered 22 pistol for small game when you're deer hunting.

Walk all over the land with a 300 win mag? No problem.
Want to take a rimfire pistol with you? What are you, an Al Queda?? :HR:
