Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308 How does it shoot??

The 700 action is still a good action? I've heard so many bad things about Remington QC.

Have you actually experienced any problems with a 700 action? I've owned at least (15) over the years and never had an issue with any. The SPS doesn't have the nice bluing or jewled bolt that the BDL's have but they're still the same basic action that has been around for almost 50 years now.

I asked this because I'm interested in the 700 AAC-SD version, I never had any Remington guns before.

ALL manufacturers can build bad product - yes, that means Savage too; all you Stevens 200 fanboys. ;) By and large the AAC 700 is a decent rifle and it reportedly is as accurate as any other SPS Varmint or Tactical that is available.

I just purchased a Browning A-Bolt target in .308 from a CGN-er recently.
And I just shot my first precision rifle today; breaking in the barrel.
I haven't really shot it, but I noticed that the grouping is pretty tight.
The last 2 rounds I had, I shot under 1" at 200m.
I'm thinking of going back to the range tomorrow for some real shooting...

I'd urge to consider that Browning model.
It comes already glass bedded.
But the barrel is 28" long... I had to drill a hole in my gun cabinet :)

also take a look at the Savage 10PC it has a 20" barrel and the new ones are also threaded, I bought one when they first came out and its a shooter but I wish I would've gotten the threaded one to put on a brake for spotting my own shots at closer ranges

x2. My PC10 is a real shooter with factory loads. :) EDIT~it is a .223

I have the 700 AAC-SD. waiting on a Fat Bastard brake for it now. Still have the green houge stock on it. I love the thing. out to 300, i can hit a 4 inch gong all day long. In fact i love the TAC's so much i'm buying one in .223 soon as i get my funds back up. I went to Frontier for mine and their service is great. Thats where i'm going for my .223 when i get it too...

Slopok, have the same setup minus the brake and a different scope. What's your opinion on the millet scope? I have the trophy xlt 4-12x40 with the doa reticle, although I like the scope, recticle and think the clarity isn't to bad the eye relief is horrible. My gun fund isn't huge at the moment but I'm considering the millet 6-25x56mm with mildot and I'm looking for a little feedback on this product, if anyone else has some suggestion on a similiar scope in the $500 range feel free to chip in.

I looked at one the other day. It is HUGE. I'd handle one before buying.

I'm looking for my first tactical/precision .308 and I'm looking at this rifle. The price is right and I want something compact. Does the 20'' affect accuracy or vélocity?
Your overall tought about the Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308??

Thanks

You can't go wrong with that rifle for your first. Don't worry about the stock, other than bed it, just get it and shoot the s**t out of it. Customize it after you can out shoot it.

I am not a big fan of the Millets myself. For the money, I think the Falcon Menace optics have better value. The Millets are huge and optical clarity, in my opinion, was lacking at higher magnification. I shoot with A Leupold Mark IV now but when I was starting out, I used the Menace.

I would also have a look at the fixed power Sightron scopes. Great value, clarity, and elevation adjustment. There were some guys using them on the 1050 yard line at the last shoot I attended and they seemed fairly robust.

Any idea of weight? Clarity? Eye relief? And any chance you looked at the 4-16?

ET

No idea of actual weight - but it was very big. It has a 35mm tube and the scope comes with rings. I don't know if other 35mm rings are readily available.

To me it looked like Millet made an effort to make it the "biggest".

Clarity - I can't really say as it was in the middle of the day and I couldn't look anywhere further than about 50 yards with it. I did look at the Weaver 3-15x50 Tactical at the same time, and the Weaver looked tiny beside the Millet.

I plan to try fiberglassing the forend of my hogue stock. Its a Howa 1500 varmint .308 but the forend should be no different than the 700 model. The plan is to remove the stiffener ribs, scuff and lay up 8 layers of fiberglass, being sure to beef up the front and back as well. Right now the forend doesnt touch the barrel when sitting on bags but it doesnt take much to flex it.

I have the SPS and the thing is a tack driver at 200 yards my scope isn't the greatest it's a bushnell 3200 elite tactical, I love the package it suits me just fine. If you can get a good deal on one I say do it you won't be dissapointed

Love my Rem 700 SPS Varmint, I bought the 26" and had it cut down to 23", recrowned and threaded ... they are acurate, when I do my part im touching bullet holes at 100 yards with reloads and 1/2 moa with factory loads. The factory stock is junk, would need bedding work but still usable to learn with. I filled mine with devcon and am using it for my Ruko 22lr rebuild.
