Do you think that if the Op had givin the number to the officer at time of arrest they can just look it up in their squad cars computer and be done with it?

No. Can't be done from the MDT in the car.

To the OP. I just want to clarify...

You said you were arrested and charged.

BC is the only province that the police recommend charges and crown does charge approval before the charge is laid.

I would like to think this would be dealt with quickly and at the lowest level if it's a mistake and the firearm is non-restricted (no other modifications by the OP).

It is possible firearm will end up at an RCMP Lab to be examined and determine its status.

Exactly. I highly doubt they will pursue charges without looking up an FRT number.

When charged did the constable release you on an appeaarance notice at the scene or were you taken to detachment and released on a Promise to Appear? These details will be important to the outcome of this situation.

Lawyer up. The firearm is legal. The lawyer has everything he needs to get this done quickly and efficiently. The RCMP shat the bed on this one.

I'll bet the charging officers know damn well the gun is non-restricted and legal.
The Crown shouldn't go ahead with the case but don't count on it. Many of them are anti-gun activist too and will participate in the persecution by process which this clearly is.
In the meantime the cops can seize his guns and his PAL might be cancelled. If he gets his guns back they will likely be covered with dings and scratches.
The next step will be for the crown to offer him a "deal" to surrender all his guns in return for dropping the charges they know are bogus.
The charged person will in any event be out legal expenses.
More persecution by process.
The arrogance of these bureaucops is unbelievable.

Who pays his lawyers bill?
Not the RCMP I'm sure.
Did the Mounties check with the Crown before laying the charge.
People have got to start suing for false arrest.
In the USA the NRA would file a civil suit and sue the cops down to their boxer shorts.
That's the only way this intentional abuse of process will stop.

Why would the gun need to go to a lab?
I have a DA Grizzly and the registration certificate says non-restricted in black and white.
All that is required is the ability to read English.
My DA Grizzly came with a pistol grip in the box with the gun.
If the stock is replaced with the pistol grip that is another story and the gun becomes either restricted or prohibited (I'm not sure which).

Hmm.... no wonder there are so many 'cop haters', they do it to themselves.

That was an intentionally designed effect of bill c-68 namely to drive a rift of distrust and animosity between the cops and the Canadian legal firearms community that was amazingly successful.
After c-68 passed the cops embraced their newly acquired powers over gun owners with a zealousness and glee that took many of us by surprise.
The damage will never be undone.

This is not USA. This is Canada so why mention USA?
The Rcmp can charge you for anything and it is up to the crown to approve the charges.
If the Rcmp have reasonable grounds to charge you, they will be protected by the CCC and any other laws.

The problem is that the definition of reasonable that many of these fine young officers use, comes to them directly from the twilight zone. I'm not sure specifically where they get the idea that anything they do while dealing with a firearm is "reasonable" but it sure as hell seems like that's the idea they have. While I realize that professional standards are rarely applied, statements like "the RCMP (or any police) can charge you for anything" points to a thoroughly UN professional approach to policing. Sadly, I'm also sure that you heard that directly from the Horseman's Mouth as it were. The statement that would be made by a professional would run more along the lines of "the RCMP can charge you when they have a reason to believe a crime has been committed". Posession of a reg cert would kind of make that unlikely, no?

Where you from BC? The terminals most definitely do give total full access to the FRT in the mobile terminals at work. Trust me ;)

Listen OP, call the detachment and make an appointment to speak with det. Commander to speak about this. If they don't big deal it won't make it past first appearance. Your only accused of this crime not convicted of it :)
