Hi guys.

First off, I have read quite a few forum discussions on this topic and have tried a few things to fix it myself; I am now getting frustrated as I have a shoot coming up this weekend!! I need my trusty 10/22 back by friday!!!!

Here’s the scoop.

Standard 10/22 with new DLASK Bull Barrel in Houge Stock. Been working fine fine for months with butler creek steel lip mags!

Last week I installed a new DLASK cocking handle by essentially prying off the old one and re-using the factory guide rod and spring... the new handle does not stay on by itself though (I have to hold it steady until I install it in the receiver).

I also installed a Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor along with the new spring it came with... I used the factory plunger.

Took it to the range and all I got was stove pipe jam after stove pipe... (Casing stuck in barrel/receiver and not extracting/ejecting)..

TROUBLE SHOOTING

I took the rifle home and, using snap caps, attempted to trouble shoot the problem. Assuming that the extractor was the issue I reinstalled the factory extractor.... same problem (stovepipe).

I then installed a newer factory cocking handle assembly.... same problem.

I then took out the entire trigger assembly + Bolt + cocking handle and installed it into my brothers 10/22 receiver + standard barrel and it worked flawlessly with the new Volquartsen extractor and Dlask Charging Handle!!!!!

So now I'm very confused and assuming that my parts are all ok and that perhaps my DLASK Barrel (or Receiver) is to blame!

Any Advice?? the Barrel looks to be aligned properly.

(ANY GOOD 10/22 GUNSMITHS IN CALGARY?????)

Is your barrel indexed perfectly? What i mean by that is your extractor hanging up at all in the extractor groove in the barrel.

If you want to compare barrels i have a Dlask as well and am in Calgary.

It's a 10-22 w/Dlask bentz chamber so I gotta ask...Are you using the same ammo?

I made the same decision once: to install more than one part at a time....perhaps you'll find time to get to the range and try adding different parts until you find the problem combination? I had a heavier charging handle that threw off the timing of my 10-22, but worked great in my buddy's...experimenting with parts is fun, when you're not under the gun!

.
I would suspect the charging handle or the ammo.

Blowback firearms are made to shoot a standard bullet and are weight and spring balanced for that cartridge.

It does sound like a short stroke is happening and the bolt is not coming back far enough to let the ejector "kick" the empties out. With the Bentz chamber being tighter, it might be holding the case a bit more.

The parts installed might be heavier than the original factory parts, which would cause a slower reward bolt speed.

Another possibility is ammo. Are you still using the same brand and LOT number or did you use different ammo. If the same brand, is the LOT number the same, as different LOT numbers can give different results.

Try running a couple of boxes of CCI Mini Mags through it so see if it functions all right. It just might need a bit of shooting to break in the new parts a bit.

I fooled around with it a bit more last night.

I think the issue has to do with the barrel, as all the other parts work just fine in my brothers with his barrel. I think I'll take it to the range tonight and put a few shots through with different ammo (federal, remington) and see how she goes.

Are there any new ruger parts (cocking handle assembly's etc) in calgary?

As Buffdog said I would suspect ammo. I have fired hundreds of thousnds of rounds through a few 10-22s and the only problems I have had are lately the Winchester ammo sucks. Problems in my Savage 93 with Winchester ammo as well. Not extracting, split cases etc.

Try putting the old extractor spring back in and see if that helps I heard the ones with the volquartsen can be problematic.

Hmmm well I think I'll take it out this weeken and run some single rounds trough and see what happens.... Otherwise I'll tweak abut more in Monday. Lots of great advice here. I'll post back up after the weekend. Maybe I'll have to take u up in te offer to troubleshoot with other parts ;)

ok... brought the barrel in to a smith for some good polishing (Thanks Stefan!!).

So, now the gun works fine with the standard ruger mags, but will not feed with my butler creek steel lips!!! So wierd as it worked just fine before all this mucking around!

Is there anything that can be done so that I can use the butler creeks again? What about replacing the magazine catch and springs?

I have an older ruger trigger group and I too was having problems with the butter creek mags.

My solution was to replace the mag release plunger spring with a heavier one. I found a heavier 13 mm spring at my local Home Hardware, cut it to a slightly longer length than the original spring and installed. Works great now. I found that the stronger spring takes the sloppiness out of the mag when it's installed. The only obvious draw back is that it takes a little more force to eject the magazines.

I hope this helps. Best of luck

Yup. Home Hardware. The package says "Trakar products inc" and it's a TC11 spring, which is 13 mm in diameter. They should be by all the little bins with misc bolts and such.

If you don't have any luck there, maybe try a farm supply store. Good luck

try wet sanding the bolt. Give it a good clean and shine it up. I had issues as well, changed extractor, cleaned receiver ect.. and still stovepiping. Wetsanded the bolt and all was well after that

Try putting the old extractor spring back in.

I've owned the Bentz chamber and I too went back to stock with extractor and spring - 100%. The Volq was problematic.

With regards to mags, throw everything that is NON-Ruger away if you want reliable. I've had feeding problems with Butler creek magazines but the 10rnd Ruger mags are awesome!

I can't remember the last failure I've had (knock on wood) :D
