i have a marlin 30/30 with a leupold rifelman 2-7x33mm scope on it. i have a freind that wants to trade me his remington 770 7mm mag with a tasco 3-9x50mm scope. is this a reasonable trade or am i getting the short end of the stick?

The Marlin 30-30 is a deer rifle. The 7mm is a deer and moose rifle. I think you are doing fine with the trade offered, but it depends upon the condition of the rifles and what you want to do with the 7mm. The Leupold scope is a good one. The Tasco is fine, but it again depends upon the condition of the scopes/mounts/rings etc.

My 2 cents worth.

the marlin and scope are in new condition i have put about thirty rounds throug the rifel. the 7mm needs a new bolt stop and has a few dings on it but nothing major. is the value of the 7mm close to my rifel?

I like remingtons but a 770 with a Tasco would never be allowed in my gun room. They were a cheap crappy gun and despite owning 2 tasco's they're both scheduled for replacement. Your Marlin and Leupold are worth way more. Keep them.

Is your Marlin an older Pre Remington model ? If so it's priceless.

Put it this way. The 770 is like a $400 Canadian Tire Special. And it's only $400 cause CDNT is a bit overpriced. At least ours is.

A Tasco scope is also a Canadian Tire special. Worth like $150 max.

Used, his whole rifle is only worth like $400.

A Pre-Remi Marlin 30-30 is like $700-800 if you find one new. Used maybe about $500 WITHOUT a scope as per my local prices.

You could trade for a much better rifle if you really don't want it. Our local used dealer won't even take a 770. You should be able to trade it for at least a real 700 or a decent Savage from a reputable dealer, and just keep your scope for whatever you trade it for.

Even if you did trade for his 770, Again keep your leupold, to put on the 770, trade your rifle for his rifle, and he still owes you like $200. And make sure you hit your moose first shot in case the gun jams during the followup.

A Pre-Remi Marlin is like a steak made from an exotic meat that is no longer available cause the animal is endangered. A 770 is like a 1.39 special from McDonalds.

At Switzers auction in bancroft, the new in box 770 packages with scopes go for about $400.

I've seen a lot of moose killed with a 30-30. To many people suffer from magnumitis.

Granted, the 7mmRem mag will give you a bit more range but for most normal shooting of moose, which is under 200 yards, the 30-30 will do the job very well, as long as the shooter does his/her job well.

Both will wound an animal with aplomb if the shooter doesn't do his her part.

The 770 is a low priced, entry level rifle. The receiver and stock are plastic. They can also be quite accurate. They were intended for budget restricted shooters.

They can't be rebarreled or tuned, so if anything goes wrong with them, they need to be replaced.

The 770 with the factory mounted scope, is valued at less than your Marlin without scope or mounts.

You need to be more choosey about your choice of friends.

Let`s put it this way, the one time I saw a 770 at WSS (when I first was looking at buying a gun) the guy behind the counter said that he`d sold 2. Both had been returned before even hitting 10 rounds, he said even the movement of the bolt sounded like sh*t. They said the few they had left were (literally) thrown in the back room never to be sold. I never even held it, but instead read reviews and didn`t find any good ones at the time. Stick with your gun. Based on what I`ve read about them I wouldn`t even trade a double cheeseburger from McD`s for one.
