Coyote Caliber?

I'm going to get a new rifle and dedicate it for coyote. What caliber would you recommend? I have been debating between a .223, a 22-250, .243 and a 25-06. What are your thoughts and what do you use?

What area in this vast country do you live?
 
A few questions you left unanswered that would help make the choice easier. Where do you hunt, will you want to save the hides, do you reload?
 
I just bought a .270 for coyote, but im not keeping hides, just tails and ears. I figure if i shoot em in the middle, i should have those parts left over. I have used a shotgun with a great deal of effect. skokie.

South of Napanee, Ontario. Has to be .270 or smaller, not keeping anything and calling. 100 to 400 yard shots.

Would also appreciate a scope opinion.

Rifle i'm looking at is a Savage Axis.

I like .223 mainly because it's real cheap to shoot. .204 or .243 are also good. For mucho performance at long range, .22-250 (short barrel life & expensive ammo) or .308 Win or .270 Win or 7mm-08 or 6.8SPC or even 7.62mm
 
I shoot coyotes each year. I've tried all the standerd ones in your list. My choice is 243. It reaches out there & kills well. 25-06 is great but wrecks hides ( they are starting to go up $$) but is great for deer.
 
You can't really go wrong with any of your options.
I use a 243 win and really enjoy coyote hunting with it. It can double as a deer rifle to with a good load. I reload so I have lots of options on what size bullets to shoot, a 55 grain at almost 4000 fps up to a 100 grain around 3000 fps.

If you reload. Load up some 110gr V-max. My Tikka shoots them very well. If you don't reload???? They would all work well. I bought a 223 in an Axis. I like it and it shoots my reloads sub MOA, but the trigger really sucks and I had to replace it witha Rifle Basix.

You know the 243 is more overbored than the 22-250!

The 22-250 is, in fact, one of the most exceptional rounds for coyotes. The problem is the TCO. The round is so fast it will wear out the barrel at about 3000-4000 rounds and ammo isn't cheap either. A .223 will offer almost as much coyote kill factor at a fraction of the price and as a side benefit, it is more versitile & way cheaper for other uses. .243 & larger can be used for deer. It's more of a case of "can I use this rifle for anything else". If you are getting a dedicated coyote gun that won't get over used, 22-250 is the holy grail.
