Coyote Caliber?

Hate to dredge up an old thread

I hunt just a little South-East in The County from you, so I'll share my odd-ball thinking & theories here :D

Initially I bought a Savage Predator Brush in .243 to serve as a double duty Coyote/Deer rig. Knowing the 6mm BC would buck the wind in The County alot better (as you know it's always windy down there) over a .22 Cal, the .243 choice was an easy choice to make. This unit likes Factory loads in the 75-95Gr range, so it'll be loaded with Hornady 87Gr VMax' under Varget eventually.

Wanting to have a lighter option avail for shorter ranges or being closer to buildings. I started researching the .204 Ruger. Everything I read about it was leaning me to that Cal. The load data & results people were sharing with 32Gr Sierra BK's were convincing at range. The only draw back I saw was the above noted wind factor as its' set-back & how much it might get knocked around in said wind.

As luck would have it & after posting a WTB ad on the EE here, I managed to procure a 20rnd count Savage Predator Max1 in 22-250.

The 250 is deadly accurate in it's out of the box condition, with its' Accu-Trigger & Accu-Stock additions. I'm really likeing the 55Gr Hornady Vmax' I'm stoking it with to the tune of sub 1" MOA. It should get tighter groupings from the 50Gr Vmax' & 55Gr Sierra Blitz Kings under Varget I have planned for it. This is one of those fun units to shoot all day long & may become my main 'Yote rig, while the .243 gets relegated to a Deer specific rig with higher Gr loads & a third option added (see below)

The above .243 hovers around the 1" grouping marks as comparison.

Now... were I to start all over again, I'd probably drop the .243 and jump into a 6.5 Creedmore.

The 250-.243 are close ballistically and almost overlap. The 6.5 Creed has a bit better flatter trajectory and punch behind it (basically a 260 Rem), while still remaining under the MNRs' Cal restrictions. It's also no different then the throwing 120Gr-140Gr 270Win pills at a Coyote, but the BC of the 6.5 Creed bullets are just a little better across the range of 110-140Gr (Hornady Data). You could basically setup for Deer and run one pill at either game species much like the average 270 person. I'm sure there'll be lighter Gr options like the 270 Win for the 6.5 Creed the longer it stays out there, as it's relatively new.

Again just my own thoughts & theories ymmv of course :D
