Coyote Caliber?

For my part i have a Tikka T-3 in .243 mounted with a Nikon Monarch 2.5to10X40mm with BDC. I love that setup and i will reload for it so i will find a great load for yotes and deers. Show us yours when you have it. Here' s mine.

I chose the .223 for smacking coyotes and have no regrets. Even though I have the dies and components, my M700 ADL Synthetic loves el cheapo Winchester white box 45gr HP's. I've reached out to over 350 yards with that load and whacked 'em, no sweat. With that said, when Remington paired the (sadly discontinued) M700 LVSF and .204 Ruger, I would have jumped on that band wagon in a New York second if I didn't already have this .223 but thats the way the cookie crumbles and I'm happy as a clam with my choice :)

South of Napanee, Ontario. Has to be .270 or smaller, not keeping anything and calling. 100 to 400 yard shots.

Would also appreciate a scope opinion.

Rifle i'm looking at is a Savage Axis.

That's the same area I hunt. You're never too far from a house, and so minimal noise is a big plus IMHO. I've had great success with the .204 but ammo options are limited if you don't reload. Next best choice I'd say is the .223 with the .22-250 right on its heels. I would choose .22-250 over them both, but the lighter report of the .204/.223 is a benefit in our area. If you're calling, you likely won't have many shots past 150 yards anyway - coyotes don't run across fields here like they do out west, so look for them closer to the edges and in the woods wherever you can find a decent setup. For a scope, choose quality over magnification. 3-9x is plenty for where we hunt. Watch the EE and you can get a lot more scope for your budget vs. buying new. Avoid package guns and the cheap scopes they give you with them. I've got no experience with the Axis, but same advise goes for rifles as with the scope - watch the EE and get a deal on whatever you buy. Buy an entry level rifle and the best glass you can afford, because a good scope can move with you to a better rifle if you decide to upgrade, but a cheap scope will haunt you until you get rid of it.

Feel free to PM me with any questions - we've likely passed each other on the road a hundred times.

Happy to hear from someone who is close to me. I within off highway 33 near the ferry to go picton. I'm just starting to get back into shooting yotes but the .270 i have is more than what i want for them. I went and looked at rifles at Gagnon's in Oshawa and did not see anything that made me lay down some cash for. We may of have crossed paths a few times, maybe if you ever come down this way you could stop for a cold one?

243 all the way (I may be a little one sided cause i own a 243)

223 mv =2982 ft/sec @ 100 yds .fps energy = 986 ft/lb (50gr ballistic silvertip)
243 mv =3493 ft/sec @ 100 yds .fps energy = 1488 ft/lb(55 gr ballistic silvertip)
22-250 mv =3341ft/sec @ 100yds.fps energy = 1238 ft/lb(50gr ballistic silvertip)
25-06 mv =3155 ft/sec @ 100yds.fps energy = 1877 ft/lb(85gr ballistic silvertip)

love the 243 cause after "yotes" , switch to 100gr for deer.

going off Winchester ballistic calculator. cool site for comparing.

My hunting areas are typically pretty dense. Rarely do I have the opportunity to reach out to those 3-400 yard dogs. For me the obvious choice was the .223 based on its effective range and price of ammo. Hornady 55 gr v-max are more than enough to knock em dead, and it doesn't ruin the hide. As for a rifle choice...well we can all give you our suggestions but what it boils down to is what fits you best in your price range.

I just bought a .270 for coyote, but im not keeping hides, just tails and ears. I figure if i shoot em in the middle, i should have those parts left over. I have used a shotgun with a great deal of effect. skokie.

A man after my own heart...lol:D
