I have a post in sporting shotguns, but it should be here. I have a 870 Wingmaster 2 3/4 28in full. Do i buy a griz. barrel from Canada ammo, find different brand (not sure where) or sell the wingmaster & buy a 12.5 with ghost ring. What can I recoup if I sell the 28" full barrel? Thanks :confused:
 
I have an 870 with a Dominion 12.5 barrel - the barrel is cheap, effective and I haven't had any issues with it. For around $150, it's tough to beat. Ghost rings can be added by any competent gunsmith, I threw a saddle rail and red dot on mine and it's the cats. If you go the saddle rail route, you may have to relieve the forend to allow the pump to throw properly, but that's minor.

X2 but to be clear you can cut it as short as 457mm which is 17.99" if you want to. I do like keeping that extra half inch so no one "mis-measures" and calls it prohib...not that they would do that...:rolleyes: So Mr. Law Expert: please show us the section of the Criminal Code that defines cutting a barrel as an illegal modification, creating a prohibited weapon :wave:
 
I would (and did) sell the long barrel and buy a Grizzly 12.5" barrel for my Wingmaster. Right now on the EE there is a Grizzly 12.5" barrel for $120 shipped and a WTB add for a long barrel. I got $75 for my 28" plain barrel with a slight bit of light surface rust. So I would say you should be able to get $50-100 depending on condition (for a plain barrel) a little more for a vent rib.
I am much happier with this setup than with the 12.5" DA shotgun (which I sold).
On the other hand, If you decide to sell the Wingmaster, let me know (I only have 2 already, one more couldn't hurt, could it?)
 
I sold a 12.5" for $150 and a plain 2 3/4 chamber fixed choke 30" for $100 on the EE, if yours has a rib and removable chokes, then you can get more.

I bought a super mag 3.5" chamber, 26" rem choke barrel for $160 on the EE

As far as 18.5" vs 12.5", I have both and the extra 6" isn't that long. With an 18.5" you can put on a folding stock, but with a 12.5" you are limited to fixed stocks (except some length of pull adjustable stocks)
 
I recently had the bbl on my Wingmaster cut down to 18.5" and threw a TacStar 2 shot magazine tube extension on it. The shotgun is nice and handy and has a 7+1 capacity.
 
If your willing to have the gun permantly modfied you can make it a 6.5 inch barrel shot gun. It requires the magazine tube to be shortened and a custom forend installed.

Cheapest option is obviously to cut the existing barrel down to 18" yourself. Of course you'll need to drill and tap for a new bead, or solder on a pedestal base. Shouldn't be too difficult but would definitely be a daunting task for a first timer.

The next cheapest option, and most viable if you cringe at the thought of using a hacksaw, would be to buy a Norinco barrel and sell the one you have. You'll probably get around $100 for the existing barrel, so you're only out about $50 or so to get the true shorty you want.

But then again, you could sell the shotgun you have and just buy a Dominion Arms 12.5" and end up with exactly what you want. You'll probably be able to sell the Wingmaster for close to what the Dominion will cost you so you won't be out too much coin.

It's really up to you, all the options are economical but chopping the barrel yourself is the cheapest.
