The last deer I shot with a rifle was in 1981 with a Win 94 in .32 Special... I've bowhunted since then... my son is antsy to get out with a rifle (he just bought an unfired 1978 Winchester 94 30/30), so I might break out my H&R Handi set of .243. .25/06, .7mm/08, .308.
Good thread- its interesting to hear what people opt for come deer season. For rifle week this year my deer rifle will be a Ruger Hawkeye in 243. I've only taken one deer with it, a younger buck. Pretty sure it was the Winchester Power-point stuff from Canadian Tire in 100 gr thru the heart from about 90 yards. Found him about 30 yards away. Optics are (frOm out in left field) a Brunton Echo BDC 3-9x40. It's a decent setup that it so far batting a thousand - one shot one kill. The rest of my tags have been filled with the bow. Good luck whatever you're using this season and be safe!
I usually take three rifles to camp, the 94 Winchester (30-30Win), the 92 Winchester (44WCF), and the 88 Winchester with 1-4 Leupold (308Win). I may opt to take the 1886 Winchester (45-70) this year. Will that mean four rifles? Doubt it, but whom do I leave home? They all work very well for me and the first two are hard to beat as carry rifles.
It looks like it'll be this one. Weatherby 338 Win Mag. wearing Bush. 4200. Makes a big bang, be using it for black bear too.Been using Fed. Fusion ammo the last few years. Last year son in law took a nice SK buck using these, maybe 200yrds, fell right there.
like i use for everything every year my 1943 no4mk1 Enfield just mounted a redfield 3-9x40. its a sporter I had given to me for nothing but its probably my favorite and has never even remotely tried to fail me... ever
As usuall my Ruger 44 cabine will be with me however my second rifle, a Steyr pro hunter in 280 rem may end up on the EE soon and if it sells before the hunting season I'll take my Firearm co. alpine in 270 win.
I have a RFB & a Tavor... Last year I finished a deer with the RFB after a successful blood track by my hunting dog Nos. I am sort of leaning towards using the Tavor, just to say I have taken a deer with it... Both the RFB & Tavor have a 1.25-8x32 Bushnell Elite 6500 mounted on them.
Of course, I may punch my tag in the early archery season... So, the rifle may not come out this year...
Ive got this sweet model 100 Winchester in .284 that I bought off the EE here, last winter.
Had the firing pin replaced and topped it with a 2x7 Leupold.
Hey thanks for all the replies...I was away and just checked in to see that Ontario deer will take quite a few diameters and velocities including 1 oz lead slugs : ). I am going to stick with my .270 (left hand M700 BDL from 1983) but have a Tikka Whitetail Hunter in .243 sitting with a 6x24x50 Vortex PST FFP that is shooting good with 95 grain Ballistic Tips...which could be another thread all together : ). I'll save the .243 for next year...need some more experience and don't think I could go wrong with 130 gr Partitions in the .270!
Winchester mod70 lightweight in 3006 (manga ported) w Leupold European 30 3-9x50 .
Points like a magic wand and kills all it touches.
Back up is a mod70 308 supergrade w firesights.
Got my huge USA printed Ontario deer tag ready to go too. Massive. What's next Bristol board sized?
Stay classy MNR.

Tikka battue with a 1X4 Leupold scope and a Browning BAR carbine with a rear peep and red fiber optic front, both in 308. Optimistic one will speak this year.
