New to Trap

If you wind up buying a break action (o/u or single) which is what I would recommend, I strongly suggest a used Browning or Beretta (Browning being my preference). Quality break action guns stand up to the many thousands of rounds you will shoot better than autoloaders. With that being said, some folks do shoot autoloaders successfully. If you want to go that route I'd stick to either a beretta (303, 391, 400 etc) winchester sx or a remington 1100.

Whatever way you go, just make sure the gun has:

A) a parallel comb (preferably adjustable)

B) a mid bead

And most importantly it needs to fit.

Buy a gun that fits you, and that will last many thousands of rounds. I would avoid the lower end guns, as they may stand up for a few thousand rounds, but a trap gun can easily see thousands of rounds per year. I have seen people show up at the local range with a Mossberg Silver Reserve, or similar lower end gun, but within a year it was replaced because of reliability issues.

It's hard to find a good used trap gun,I would spent the extra $$$ and have a look at a New browning BT-99 price starts at about $1200.

Cheers Gar

A friend was looking for a used BT-99, and in 10 minutes of looking online, I found six of them priced in the $800 to $900 range at dealers in Canada.

I shoot trap with a Winchester 101 trap model & a Remington 1100 trap model. I find the 1100 easier on the shoulder.
If you ever have a chance to shoot a high end trap gun like a Perazzi, Krieghoff or Ljutic, you'll really appreciate the difference. Plus you'll be checking your line of credit to see if you can justify such a gun.

Is your 1100 the one with the Monte Carlo stock?

I'd look into a 20 gauge mossberg silver reserve O/U. Mossy makes great guns and I'm sure you'd enjoy it. Pretty affordable too.

Edit: You might also try the maverick hunter in 12 gauge. Probably find them for $450 and with the synthetic you won't have to worry about maintaining it at all.

20ga. For Trap? Thanks for your informed post.

Just because you can't do it doesn't mean others can't. When I had the time I probably broke more clays in a month than you did in three. With a pump action 20 gauge. Everybody's different, are you actually implying you can't shoot trap with a 20gauge?

No I am not. You can shoot Trap with anything you want. You will be more successful with a 12 Bore. though.

You don't see any 20 gauge shotguns at the Grand American. In fact you won't see any ATA shooter shooting registered targets using one. Anybody who is serious about this knows this is a 12 gauge game.
