I have found a new place to shoot that will allow me to shoot at 600 and finally 660 yards (600m). Should be fun to see if the little 55's hit good or just drop out of the sky
Aug 2012 600 yard update:
Range: 600 yards (550 meters).
Ammo: American Eagle 55 grain bulk "AR.223"
Rifle: Classic Green 1:10 twist, bipod removed from rifle.
Optic: Trijicon Acog TA11F 3.5X35mm
Optic mount: Swiss Arms STANAG Acog mount.
Shooting position: Prone using magazine as rest.
Wind: Steady 5 kmh from 1 O'clock with occasional gust to 10-15kmh.
Elevation: 1800ft above sea level.
Target: Figure 11. 17"W X 44"H.
Well I am starting to see some consistently missed shots at this range as things are becoming very dependent on the wind. Still I am pleased with the AE55's performance and am achieving around a 70% hit rate on average at this range.
Here is the best group of the day, a 5 shot that I found rather odd, normally my groups shoot into a rounded pattern not a perfectly straight line so wtf?
The barrel was getting warm from shooting up a steel gong lower down the hill at 400 yards so it could be stringing, I let the rifle cool and things went back to normal after that. Still weird that they all went perfectly in line vertically.
5th round in right leg. Will try at 700 yards next time out.
