I have a Savage Axis .22-250 with a 12:1 twist. What is the largest game I can ethically take and the best round for the job?

I guess I need to add to my question, I'm north of North Bay Ontario and the last time I shot an animal was 22 years ago with a .22lr (gopher head shot, found out that a chest shot is better, whistled through the poor bastards ears) The only hunting experience I have is the Ontario hunting course a year ago. I also have a Marlin .444 but I have better acuracy with my Savage. Ethical for me is shoot to kill, not just wound.

If you are can shoot it accurately ALL the time, and don't get buck fever you would be OK shooting deer with a 60gr partition....Broad side, to slight quartering away only.. NO running shots..

If you live in Saskatchewan... not legal for deer or any big game, though would certainly dispatch said animals with well placed shot.
The law there states a centrefire rifle of more than .23 inch

Legal in Saskabush for coyotes fox, gophers, crows .....

I'm not sure a 1:12 twist would stabalize a 60 gr. partition, you would need to shoot some to be sure. You woud also likely have to load your own, I don't think they're available as a factory load.

I would put the upper limit at wolf size, or 100 lbs. max. As for deer, would you really want to pass up a once-in-a-lifetime buck just because you can't get the perfect stationary broadside pose? Do yourself and the deer a favour and use a decent gun.

Being a flat base bullet @ 0.790 in length it wouldn't be a problem..
Federal loads both the 60gr partition, and 50gr Triple-Shock..

Just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should be done. I have seen moose dropped clean with a head shot, but the range was less than fifty yards and she was standing facing us without a care in the world. (stupid moose) I have also killed cattle with a 22rf in a coral.
What do you want to hear?
I've shot deer with 25-06 to 375HH some run, some drop with either. This is an old debate that has been beat to death since i was young.
Generally speaking use the heaviest bullet (with the best type of construction) you and your rifle will shoot accurately and use your hunter ethics.
Ethics is your most important part of the decision on what caliber to use on what size of game and ethics seem to measured in degrees with some people.

Plenty of guys around here using the .223 and .22-250 and even .22 hornet on deer. It's legal in NB, and a heck of a lot more effective than buckshot - and even that's worked fine for me.

If it's legal, why not? I'd trust my .223 over my .30-30. It's more accurate.

Here's the thing about ethics..

Ethics are a personal choice, an opinion..Everyones is different as opinions are..Your personal ethical opinion can be voiced, but that doesn't mean your ethical opinion is the correct one for someone else.. You're ethical opinion is yours and yours alone, just like your #####, and like your ##### shouldn't be forced upon others..

yep..will also shoot the 64gr. Win PP and I believe the Speer 70gr. They are both short enough.

If I would be hunting deer with a 22-250 i would buy 50gr. TSX and push them as fast as possible.

Same here in MB (actually here I think it is not less than .23).

WRONG!!! There is absolutely no restriction on big game calibers in MB...I know this because I researched it extensively as well as asked my local CO.

Taken directly from the 2012 Hunting Guide: "CENTREFIRE RIFLES
A centrefire rifle may be used to hunt big game only during
general (rifle) seasons. A centrefire rifle of .23 calibre or less is not
recommended
."

My first buck with my new 22-250 (2007 general rifle season) was taken cleanly with a 55gr Sierra GameKing. A 15 yard shot to the boiler room bang flop!! Would not hesitate using it again!!

When Karamojo Bell retired to Scotland after ivory hunting he used nothing but a .22 Savage HP for deer hunting .But then again he knew how to shoot.Harold
