TNW Suomi M31 Impressions

Ya....it's 12 pounds of gronky Finnish hardware

If one made a shorty barrel.....and installed it......that person would have 30 days to report it

...........remove shorty barrel on day 29......good to go.....

Instead of a shorter barrel, what if you go the other way, like putting on in looks only, a real cool project barrel, like from an MG34 or MG42,
1919 or an "Ma Deuce" M2 Browning 50 cal barrel?
It may be heavy, so a cart with wheels may be needed. Maybe even a Bren Gun Carrier to haul it around.

15 seconds......like. Someone else said

Turn catch 90 degrees......turn barrel shroud 45 degrees ....remove shroud.....remove barrel....lickity split...no muss no fuss

No threads

Nice. Well maybe there will be a market for short barrels. Much better than swapping out a vz.58.

I don't know if that rule is valid if putting a restricted length barrel on a non restricted rifle. I think that's just if putting different barrel lengths on the same class of firearm.
Making it restricted might not be a good plan unless it's registered that way.

Do a search for Ed Burlew's legal opinion about swapping in a shorter barrel.
In addition there is a very specific CGN prohibition on swapping in a restricted length barrel at a range. There were those suggesting dong this - transport a gun as non-restricted, swap in a short barrel at the range, swap it out for the transport home.
The change, once made, must be reported. Not if it still exists after 30 days. There is no thirty day pass for possession of an unregistered restricted.

Well this is really a moot point for me - I don't plan on getting a TNW. But out of curiosity...

Would this influence a manufacturer to not supply a shorter barrel? If swapping barrels becomes too easy, might it have been better to make it a short barrel restricted version of the TNW Suomi and make the barrel changes something only a gunsmith could do?

Wolverine Supplies was treading carefully and not bringing in a much shorter barreled version of a rifle they currently stock, even with demand for such, to not risk having a now restricted rifle reclassified prohibited.

What ever happened to the SSD BD3008? How did that get resolved?

Good question. Marstar was going to bring in the Suomi as a Restricted firearm as barrel switching was too easy. Only John knows what happened to that Marstar/TNW deal.

How North Sylva managed to get these imported with a non-restricted barrel is next to a miracle. My only thought is that the barrels are new TNW barrels and that original Suomi barrels cannot fit the new TNW receiver without significant refitting/modification. The other possibility is the new TNW modified semi bolt may not lock properly into an original barrel. Both variations would render the rifle useless without modification to the barrel/bolt/receiver.

However, if original barrels do fit without any modifications I think this was a huge oversight in the classification of the firearm.

I like the idea of the non-restricted classification as it makes it easier to get out and shoot. I do admit I like the looks of a shorter barrel (restricted) model.

I suspect that the US version does not accept an original barrel, but the newly made 16" one instead. The US SBR rule would make a M31 that would accept an original short barrel problematic. If this is the case, the only alteration for Cdn. non-restricted sales would be the 18 3/4" barrel, and a Cd. short barrel wuld have to be purpose made to fit.

For comparisons...

From Gunboards.com posts...

Original Finnish M31 Suomi - 12 inch barrel. Finnish M31 SJR with the muzzle brake - 14 inch barrel. USA TNW M31 semi-auto - 16 inch barrel.

With a SBR permit (aprox. $200 USD) from the BATF you may be able to use a 12 inch barrel. One GB member is building a Suomi from a parts kit using a surplus barrel and another has finnished a Finnish (pun intended) full auto.

U.S. stick magazines: 20, 36 and 50 round 'coffin' magazine.

U.S. drum magazines: 50 and 70 rounds. (aftermarket and Finnish surplus?)

Price: Centrefire Systems: $399 USD, 09/12, $300 USD on sale 01/12; Finnish surplus Kp/31 Suomi: $1000 USD (Gunboards.com)

In Canada.

Non restricted Canadian version - 18.6 inch barrel.

Any magazine: 5 rounds.

Price $699 CDN List, Presale $599 CDN (check dealers)

Here's pics of the original Finnish Kp/31 and Kp/31 SJR:

Does anyone know if there is a Restricted version available or coming? Perhaps with surplus 12 inch barrels (would surplus 12 inch barrels be legal in Canada?)

The CSA VZ 58 Sporter is available with 7.5 and 11.75 inch barrels!

Does this thread need a poll re barrel length choice?

Either way though, it sucks that mags have to be pinned at 5 rounds!

NP, I loved the part about hunting ground squirrels and rabbits with a Suomi.

I must admit that I'd love to see the look on other hunters' faces if they saw me in the bush with one.

I do not think that a restricted version will be coming, unless someone imports one via a private importer. Marstar had a TNW restricted barrel version approved by the CFC and they still had the test gun back in July, so their is an authentication number for a restricted TNW Suomi on the CFC data base. Even though the long gun registery is gone, I am sure the CFC still kept the long gun authentication numbers as well (important for import). I assume that this rifle has two authentication numbers (one restricted and one non-restricted).

I am curioous about the TNW PPSH's that North Sylva says they will bring in? Marstar was not going to look into it (no CFC test gun). So will it be brought in as a restricted or non-restricted gun? At least ammo for the PPSH will be dirt cheap.

Its the pinned mags. I have no problem with five round mags on a hunting rifle or a milsurp rifle. But on a black rifle or milsurp smg - it just burns me.

*bang* *bang* *bang* *bang* *bang* change *bang* *bang* *bang* *bang* *bang* change... ...repeat.

ARs & XCRs not withstanding.
