Ruger 10/22 vs Savage Mark II

Looking for my first firearm. Ive narrowed it down between a Savage Mark II and a Ruger 10/22.
Ive heard great things about both.
The reason id be interested in a Savage is because its a bolt action, so it'd be cheaper to shoot, and i just like going through the motions. But the Ruger is legendary, and fun to go semi-auto.
Any opinions?

I own both and if I was gonna get rid of one it would be the 10/22 hands down. Great little rimfire semi, but the Mark II is a nice rifle and VERY accurate.

Do you want to go squeeze off a bunch of rounds and hit popcans @ 50 yards or do you want to be able to hit a popcan @ 150 yards? Basically do you want a red dot or a big scope?
 
ill give my vote for the savage aswell!

i had a 10/22 i put over $1000 into just like mlehtovaara, i bought a savage mark II (BASE model "G") and man this thing would out shoot my 10/22 ALL day long.

not to mention the accutrigger! its amazing :)

Sorry, but cans at 150 with a 10/22 are more than doable. The Savage has the edge, but its the shooter that makes the shot.

If you are looking for accuracy, the MKII is the way to go. The SR22 however is a very accurate semi and will probably shoot as good as the MKII at 50 yards.
 
I can certainly speak for the savage. The acu-trigger is wonderful to help with a lighter trigger pull. The fire sights on these FSS models also help an old guy see them better especialy when hunting.

Which ever gun you choose, I'm sure you will really like it! JMHO.
 
I'll agree with everyone else...if it's your first gun get a bolt.
It teaches you to shoot slow and careful...and accurately.
I have the 93FVSS (Savage .22WMR) and it has taken me all summer but I have it pretty much mastered...1moa at 100yds if I'm doing my part.
A month ago I purchased the Mossberg Tactical...a semi-auto much like the 10/22.
Gotta admit...it is fun shooting as fast as I can pull the trigger.
Ammo cost go up dramatically...in a shooting session I can be happy shooting 50 rounds on the Savage...with the Mossberg I'll easily blow through a couple of hundred rounds.
And it is very easy to get caught up in volume of fire and not take your time to shoot accurately.
Suppressive fire in .22 ;-)
 
You get a miniature stock with both rifles

I owned both and sold my Ruger 10/22 after buying a Savage Mk II BTVS.
The Savage Mk II is an extremely accurate rifle while the Ruger 10/22 is very accurate.
For hunting, the Ruger 10/22 is a better rifle since you get an instantaneous follow up shot but for general use Savage Mk II is far superior.

Both of these rifles have a big problem: the come with a very small stock
I'm looking to update to Anchustz or Ruger 77/22 because of this issue.
(I don't know if the Cz comes with a adult sized stock).
