I don't need no stinking threaded barrel (but I do want my warranty!). So I've been working on a little project ;)

The pics pretty much tell the story. Of course, you do need a lathe, MIG or TIG welder, acetylene torch, and a milling machine so this is probably not a solution for everyone...

Kinda looks a bit like a *gasp!* SILENCER, doesn't it? But really, it's just another boring blast cone similar to the Dlask or Noveske KX-3.

The muzzle brass busing is a tight fit, but the whole thing is retained by the RFB accessory thread back by the handguard.

I haven;t test fired it yet as I have a few things I want to change/add before I parkerize it and test fire. This one is a bit on the heavy side as it's a prototype. I think I could lower the weight as much as 30% if I had a CNC machine to better control the wall thcknesses of the parts and by using thinner tubing (I used what I had on hand). It should not affect function any more than any other blast cone muzzle attachment. The RFB has an adjustable gas system, so it should be not issue.

So when will you be mass producing those? ;)

If you are willing to share some dimensional specs I might be able to convince my CNC machinist buddy to run off a few for us. He's a little hesitant to build parts for firearms due to liability issues but I might be able to convince him with some cash and a promise of anonymity.

Please let us know how the test firing goes.

Mass production on manual machines isn't economically viable.

I think it's best I wait until this is finished and tested before any series production! :)
 
This is exactly the kind of "barrel shroud" I was going to see if I could get Alumalite to make for me.

I would take one of yours in a second if you could make it out of aluminum. I am interested to here how it performs. It looks like it will even deflect a lot of the noise away from the shooter as well.
 
The front end of it is similar (though not identical) to a Noveske KX3 muzzle blast deflector, so it should perform a similar function and deflect some of the sound downrange. Unfortunately, if I made it out of aluminum, I could not have an active/useful muzle device integrated. The aluminum would not stand up to the "powder undercutting" and would die pretty quickly under actual use. It would be fine for a cosmetic barrel shroud though.

Also, if the muzzle devide itself were steel and secured to an aluminum shroud using screws or rivets, it would be a little lighter, though not a lot lighter I think.

so what does this have to do with vault and kel tec warranty? I want a new barrel but want to go directly through kel tec and not vault. can you send me details?
 
I see your point about the materials. I am still extremely interested in this because it also covers the exposed threads on the barrel which I hate, and I am not putting the quad rail on my rifle.
 
It's pretty simple, if you thread the muzzle you void the lifetime warranty. This project hopes to address that.

I'm pretty sure that the reason Kel-tec won't warranty threaded barrels is because if they go back to the States for work they cannot be sent back to Canada, due to the export restrictions on threaded barrels. Also threaded barrels can't be imported into the States as well. However nice idea Claven2.
