Unidentified Weapon

Yes, Captain Boys. The one I saw has a muzzle-brake attatched. As far as I know some were converted by owners to 50 cal Browning after the fact and were never issued to the army in that calibre

Most were converted in the US to get away from the "destructive device" regulations, which apply to anything over 50 cal in the US. My own reason for conversion was because ammo was too hard to come by and I like to shoot my stuff.

There are photos of one converted by the US military to 50BMG and used for long distance harassing fire (and sniping) during the 50s. The barrel was just a M2 barrel grafted onto the rifle.

thanks everyone for all the replies. Yes, whoever saw the picture and called that it was backwards was right! I was lazy and just used my webcam to take a photo. My scanner wasn't working. As for shooting one, Stencollector, I would honoured if you would allow me to take a shot, and I don't mind being blasted back a foot. Heck, two feet if need be! :) Really awesome being in a forum like this. Thanks again.

Knew a guy who imported one from England. To be legal there, it had been converted to a shotgun.

Two Marks of AP ammo were issued with the Boys ATR:
MkI 905 gr bt at 2450 fps penetrated 16 mm armour plate at 100 yd me 12065 fp.
MkII 735 gr bt at 2900 fps penetrate 19mm armour at 100 yd me 13729 fp.

For comparison:
50 Browning AP M2 705 gr bt at 2900 fps penetrate 7/8" (22mm) homogenous steel at 200 yd me 13168 fp.

Not just two Marks of AP.....
Three Marks of Ball
Two Marks of Practice Ball
Three Marks of Proof
One Mark of Tracer
One Mark of Drill
One Mark of Dummy
.22 Adaptor

In addition there was an armour piercing W Mark III which was never formally introduced and a .55/.303 Training Round.

I can't post attachments otherwise I would put some pictures up. How many posts do I need before I can post attachments?

Hey everyone, found a picture of my grandfather training men at Petawawa in the mid to early 40's. Does anyone know what kind of gun this is in the picture? IF so, any chance I can find someone to fire one? I would love to! Thanks for your help. BTW the picture is a little fuzzy and I can get a clearer one, I just thought some of you experts would know.

Hey!

Is that Alpha Range!? :D lol

Cool rifles. I would prefer one of the Soluthurn S18's I heard Wolverine has one as a 'conversation piece' - or was it some other business?

Talk about immensely huge and powerful rifles for which you can't get ammo or range time for! :D Still and all - would be cool to have as a 'man - cave' gun.

I have fired both the 20mm Solothurn and the Lahti, and whilst fierce, they are manageable.

I was also surprised at how accurate they were at about 1,000 yards, espectially with WW2 era ammo.
