Why I love my Glock (not why my gun is better than yours)

Excellent post. When I first started shooting, every senior member would always tell me how Glocks were awful. I herd so much slander about them that I was raised anti Glock. Most of this came from a retired Chief Firearms Instructor from Depot in Regina. He was the best shooter and always won all the competitions I attended. He hated Glocks, and I trusted his word.

I started out shooting P.P.C. revolver league with my Simth & Wesson 686. A few years in: "I went to the dark side." This is what our Revolver guys would call the action league. I bought a 1911. As the years moved on I really wanted to switch to 9mm from 45acp mostly because I wanted to see my targets before they get patched up for the next shooter instead of looking for my 45 brass. I bought a Sig 226. I love it. But... there is still something missing. Maybe it's just my addiction of wanting more guns.

I admit I am addicted to Nutnfancy and a few others on youtube, they preach that Glock is the go to war gun with S&W M&P and Sig in the same catagory. The more I hear and research about the reliability of the Glock, I can't wait to add one to my collection. As soon as I save up the cash, the Glock 17 gen 4 will be in my vault.

I can't bring myself to sell my 686, 45, or my Sig. I still love them no matter what. But I just can't wait to get my G17!!!

yup, i dont own one, but glocks are fine guns, good price, the things you list are the reasons why i like my m and p, light, reliable ect, i just preferred a SA trigger and smaller grip... i wish parts were easier to get, but thats the trade off i guess.

comes down to different guns for different people, not gun x is better then them all.

Good post indeed. After years of shooting as my hobby, I understand there isn't a better gun in the market, the gun you enjoy to own, maintain and shoot is a better gun. It is all about the need of a shooter. I have a pair of G17 which is kinda of my keeper. like the grip angle, love the trigger( after get used to). And this gun is about the best inexpensive gun you can buy and pretty much trouble free.

Well done Maetsack; a well written summary.

I would like to add that another positive feature of the basic Glock pistol is that all models work the same way (excluding G18 full auto), even when they are different in size and calibre. You do not have some models that are "cocked and locked", others DAO (Double Action only) Decockers, DAK triggers or whatever. If you know how to operate or dissemble one, they are all the same. No problen as you may have with various take down methods in the various 1911 style pistols where some have barrel bushings, others dont, others ...etc., etc.

Also you can use the full size mags in the compact and sub-compact models. I even used the G18 magazine loaded with 40 S&W ammo in my G23 and G35 (obviously not here in Canada) and it would work reliably with more than 25 rounds of 40 S&W ammo on hand. That long and heavy mag really helped to keep the barrel down!

Great pistols!

I've got a G34 in 9mm and it's my go-to CQB and /or training platform.

I love my SIG P226 and my STI 9mm Spartan 1911 single stack, they have their merits too, but let's focus on why my G34 is with me at CQB matches and while instructing on the range...

Light to carry - while working on the firing line all day long, this pistol on the vest , waist , or tactical thigh rig is not heavy like my 1911 STI single stack

No worries - I spend lots of time organizing targetry in the backstop/pits/butts surrounded by cement walls/structures so scratches and bumps against the cement do not cause me to fret.

No Sharp edges - in a hurry to draw and rack the slide (how the CF soldiers do things), the edges are smooth and kind to my softie 'teacher' hands :D

Gen4 grip - No more handling the Glocks like a two by four... nice and smooth , small and adjustable backstraps. Life is good. My wife who also likes the 1911 grip, loves the Gen4 grip, too.

Reliable without any maintenance- often I am in a hurry to get home, unpack and get fed when my wife calls me, so the 1911's get oiled right away and then stored without cleaning (until the mid week). The Glock hardly needs lube but being a good PPCLI Infantryman of yesteryear, I'm trained to add oil ANYWAYS, but I do it sparingly on the disconnector, as the Glock manual / instructions suggest

Parts, magazines, upgrades - All over the place in Brownells, Glockstore, USA, Canada, almost everywhere. No complaints here.

Advice galore - many experts all around me, so willing to share, much experience to capitalize on

Don't get me wrong, I still love my 1911's as my go-to target range pistol, but the Glock magazines remain in my TacVest mag pouches!

Cheers,
Barney

You'll be happy to note, at least at the 1st Btn, they aren't teaching the "draw, rack, shoot" method. We're all about being ready to go and just have the safety on. Well at least the last time I got pistol training in house. Always good to hear an older Patricia give his point of view (since we always have the best training, :D).

I definitely agree with all the points on the Glock. It was the first pistol (actually first firearm) I ever shot, and it was instinctual. Not to mention from the people I've talked to, or learned from on courses the top two answers are usually Glock or Sig for what pistol they'd want. Not to mention the amount of 9mm ammo you can carry/load compared to .45 just makes it even more convenient if you SHTF.

just picked up my first glock this week...a brand new glock 22 gen 3 with factory Trijicon nightsights...

i actually got it in a trade and had the intention to sell it to make some money back, but now i'm going to keep the thing.

i've handled and shot glocks before, years ago when i was a less experienced shooter and i never really saw the hype or appreciated its qualities...after a few more years of shooting experience and not touching a glock...this little gem falls in my lap...suffice it to say, wow.

its extremely light (lighter than my m&p), points naturally for my grip and stance, decent trigger...is the right size/comfortable for my hands...but man is it light.

i shoot a cz shadow for ipsc and i'm considering using the g22 for fun next time out.

Simple to maintain/strip.
Huge amount of factory/aftermarket support.
Can take an extreme sh*t kicking and still function flawless.
Accurate.
Large capacity mags (more of a benefit south of the border).
Parts are common/interchangeable throughout the pistol line (barrels.mags, springs, frames, slides etc etc).
No sharp edges/levers/buttons/safeties/hammers to catch on clothing.
Very light.
The Tenifer finished slide is very durable/strong.
Affordable.
Available in a wide range of calibers.
Not fussy with ammo.
Everything about it just "works".

I have a Glock 17 4th Gen and I'm very happy I made the choice I did. It was my first handgun, and I've since shot many others but none feel like my Glock. I would have to agree when others posted that they feel intuitive to some degree and for a nublet the maintenance learning curve is great. Very happy, just wish I could always get more trigger time in!!

Nice post, i'm hoping that someone will bring in some G30's with an extended barrel. I got to shot one in Florida and would love to have one up here.

LOL...You obviously don't own and never shot the Gen. 4 pistols. I have a G22 gen.4 and I've put hundreds of rounds through it, many in competition settings and it has performed flawlessly. But, go on, feed the internetz with unsubstantiated rumors piggybacked on quasi humorous animated videos...

I also own a gen. 3 G22 and I find the gen.4 to be an improvement on something that was already a great product.

Was it that obvious? ;) It was intended to give Glock Gen4 owners a chuckle, nothing more.
