Which WMU?

I'm getting a group together most of whom have never hunted moose before, for a hunt next year. Expect the group size to be 4-6. One guy hunted moose growing up with his dad in Newfoundland. Another guy has hunted other big game including Caribou in Quebec.

Unfortunately none of us have information on what the WMU is that we ought to plan a hunt in. We are willing to drive about a day - 10 to 14 hours to get to some spot that offers a good chance at a tag and a good chance at a moose if we get a tag.

Realize we are starting rather early and we may well not have a tag in our first year. However, I'd like to try to come up with an area that we can go back to year after year if the group hangs together and an area that we can get to know. Might even visit it in the spring or summer to get to know the area.

Also looking for an area that does have some decent camps / accommodation for not a ridiculous price. Man some of the prices I've seen for lodges that cater to American hunters are out of the this world.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Im Guessing you are in Ontario ? To get good odds of a tag you will have to drive north west. Take a look at the WMU tag allotments for the Units starting around Hearst and move westward. A lot of the farther WMU's will only require 1 or 2 hunters to garantee a Tag.

Hard to say where 10-14 hours of driving would take you if we dont' know where you are ?

If you are in Ontario, stay away from 21A. They issued 2300 tags this season. I live five minutes from the start of 21A...went down opening weekend. Must have been over 1000 hunters on the main logging road I was on. Big camps at every cutover, gravel pit and side road. More people than moose, for sure.

By the description, in WMU's, I would say in Alberta.

Andrew Lake Lodge might be able to help you out. As for thru an Outfitter, its not cheap to do a remote hunting camp.

Gotta love these guys who think we're mind readers. :) Andrew lodge sounds pretty pricey for his taste. Aldo, if he IS in Alberta, he's looking at getting a draw for moose anywhere and plan on at least 2 or 3 years between hunts.

In the that time frame you can make up to Longlac, not sure what WMU but you only need two hunters for a tag there.

Good point was made about hunt multi species...If you wanted to drive further and still have a good chance at a Tag..you can hunt Deer and Moose at the same Time in the Nestor falls area (9a or 9b). If would of applied and drawn a bull tag in 9B I could of shot Deer and a Bull Moose on the same day. Not to mention a Pile of Grouse. This was in the third week of October and I didnt' see much other hunters around.

9a, 9b are a bit of a hike but certainly doable. The quickest way there and back is through the USA. How much hassle will it be to get firearms and game through the USA?

I would go with an outfitter in White River you get a camp and don't have to worry about the little things for your first time out. After that you will have an idea of what you will need to go it on your own.

Yes, an outfitter is a great idea! There are some great outfitters even closer to home with very resonable prices. Wehunt in 28 and pay $500 per/guy, cabins, running water, showers and everything else but food! When my group started going they only had half the required group size (11 min) so they hooked up with another group of guys that came in...15+ years later and we still hunt with them and are great friends! Other nice thing about where we are...we have tagged out every year (also get a tag from the outfitter).

Need to fill out batf forms etc. I researched it and it should take 6 months or less. Getting the game over and back over the border maybe the trickier part. Really not sure about that part. check with customs.
