Is this sight original for an 1915 No1 MkIII*?

Yup, the No1Mk3 (no star) rear sight had windage-adjustment, that's one thing that went away when the "*" conversion came into effect.

The Mk III* wasn't introduced until late in 1915 and factories used up existing inventories of parts until some of the new changes came into effect.

Before you try to adjust the windage, look under the sight where the windage part joins the body. Sometimes there is a tiny pin locking the two parts together.

We already know the windage knob works.

But yeah this this is sportorized and is the one being tapped for scope mounts by the new owner.

The owner should avoid a D&T job like the plague!

The only mount commonly available for the SMLE these days is the Weaver TO-1. It is NOT satisfactory at all.

S&K makes a no-gunsmithing mount which is very solid and does away with drilling holes. It has a LOT of things going for it, among which are the fact that you can move your scope from one rifle to a different one without having to have two types of rings. Takes about half an hour to install, cost is about the same as a D&T job but the results are much better.

I would really hate to see another early rifle D&T'd; there are not many unmolested ones left.

X2! Save a SMLE! For the price of a cup of coffee you can save a rifle from Bubba. We can send you regular updates on the rifle, and pictures of it firing, un-molested by modern "improvements", to keep you up to date on it's status. While it's too late for many of history's witnesses, there is a chance to save this one, and all it takes is one visit to the EE, to find a Bubba'd one, or a savage axis/edge. Operators are standing by.

I have mentioned this twice to the owner. He just doesn't want what he calls the "hassle" of ordering one, waiting for it to arrive, and installing it. Personally I'd rather see any milsurp "restored" back to the way it was built for the military. This is my plan for a "P14" that I have. I'm hoping it won't take too much....

I just completed a rebuild of a No1 Mk III that was sporterized and within minutes of a D&T for a scope!! I begged the guy to let me do it for him and he loves me now!!

How much did a rebuilt like that cost?

This one kept the same but stock but added all the rest of the wood and hardware for less that $100, I think something like $78 for everything. There really ins't much to to it. 3 metal parts and the wood.
