I just picked up a Rem 700 in 7mm express with a detachable Mag. how do I figure out what version of a 700 this thing is?

An ADL has a top loading blind magazine. A BDL has a hinged floorplate. If your rifle has a Remington factory original detachable magazine, it is neither an ADL or BDL.

ADL 700's have a blind magazine, that is no hinged floorplate or detachable magazine at all. BDL models have a hinged floorplate, whiteline spacers and a synthetic forend tip, at least the older 700's do. Unless someone installed a QUIK KLIP(spelling?) in an ADL, that isn't what you have.

It came with 2 mags. that look to be remington mags. It also came with 2 stocks a wood and a synthetic, both also appear to be factory originals...the wood stock does not have the black forend cap. It did have open sights at one time.

I got my blue book out, and it does show a BDL DM (detachable mag)version although I dont really know the difference between the 2 versions.

The blue book also describes a couple other 700s with the detachable mag. but none in 7mm express.

How does the mag detatch? Squeeze the sides or button on the trigger guard?

Doesn't sound like a factory original gun to me.

Date of manufacter is April of 1979, this coincides with ADLs being marked as 7mm express from 79 thru 82.

The mag release is on the forward outside edge of the trigger gaurd.

So, me thinks this is an ADL with a kwik klip mod!

The rebranded 280 Rem aka the 7mm express was introduced in the late 70's (1979 IIRC) and was only used for a couple of years before reverting back to the original 280 Rem designation. At this time there were no detachable magazine variants of the 700 so it sounds like an aftermarket conversion like the Kwik Klip that has already been mentioned.

Look at the magazine inletting. Not many can inlet the bottom of an ADL so that it would appear like factory inletting. But I tend to agree it probably was an ADL with the Kwik Klip conversion. I once owned a rare version of the 700 marked 7mm 06. They didn't make many of them...

...and a good picture is worth 1000 words...

Unless it's a BDL DM which was made for several years. Best identifier is the forend tip: black will likely be a BDL DM.

Im currently looking at a bdl dm 270 lefthand.

End of forearm and pistol grip cap are black with white spacer.

Mag release is directly behind the mag.

Any suggestions on if this is original??

And what kind of spare mag wud it need??

OK, so does this affect the value of this rifle?

Absolutely does!! The Kwik-Klip conversion is not the greatest magazine system.
It forces one to seat bullets considerably deeper than the factory magazine length.
This means a longer "jump" to the lands, not always a good thing.
I avoid this conversion like the plague.
Eagleye.

Its a $450-$550 $ shooter as it sits with either stock possibly $550 with syn. stock less with converted ADL stock. Good hunting reg, the clip system is fine if using factory ammo may have some limitations if hand loading.

You can always get $350 for a 700 action, $100 for a used Kwik Klip, $30 for an extra Kwik Klip magazine...
