Pls Remove

I know next to nothing about K98's but I just wanted to point out a couple things I see cause it's fun to talk milsurps and my wife won't listen anymore.

I notice the barrel has been removed or tightened with a pipe wrench...not a good sign. You can see the teeth marks on it.

I don't think your receiver is correct as it's missing any and all markings that should be there (waffenamps, serial numbers, model etc.) BUT I could be wrong...I often am.

Last thing I noticed, the waffenamp on your second pic, the thunderchicken perched on the Nazi cross...it looks like a fake, just the shape is weird looking. I've seen pics of fakes before that looked like that. Some of the other waffenamps, while they look more correct, they look too deep. Maybe just the pics.

Wish I could tell you more...and wish I had better news for you.

K98 Barrel on an M98 type action. (not sure which one though without markings).

The barrel and action have been mated together. Make sure it has proper headspace. The barrel markings show that the barrel has been indexed with a new receiver because of the position the barrel now sits. The sights have also been sweated into the correct top position as well. And yes, definitely done in a regular vice, possibly with a pipe wrench too (doesn't necessarily mean it was done improperly, just kinda wrecks the finish..)

Make sure it's safe, find a stock, and enjoy!

PS: I have a K98 Sporter stock for sale... *Shameless Plug* ;)

The whole thing is a rather poor put together on a scrubbed receiver. The receiver itself looks to be a small ring receiver as well, tough to find a stock that will fit.

There are also vice jaw marks visible.

With the visible damage done to both, value would be minimal.

It would take more work/expense than could be justified to turn it into anything other than a knock around rifle. Even then, an already built sporter could probably be picked up cheaper.

It would make a very good learning curve project though.

Thanks for the quick feedback. The vice marks are making sense now. I paid $50.00 for it so I knew I was taking a risk. Do you think it would be worthwhile to find an K98 receiver, bolt and stock? Or would I be around the same price range as just purchasing a complete rifle.

I'm not too picky on the collector value. I just like owning a piece of history that shoots!

I really hope the swastika marking on the top isn't faked.

I think it is a large ring receiver that has been machined down to small ring. This was a common thin in the early 70's when kar98a receivers became scarce but ppl still wanted a trim receiver for stalking rifle spprters.

I wouldn't bother trying to correct everything it would just be a time consuming process for little gains. That barrel is far from pristine so you can either cut your losses or just do your best to make it function safely. If you'd like to have a relatively inexpensive shooter I'd recommend finding a nice Russian Captured K98.

On another note, I don't believe that your waffenamt stamp is fake. My 1938 dated ERMA (Code 27) has one on it that looks very similar to that one. Here's some quick research on the "623 waffenampt":

WaA623 660 Steyr-Daimler-Puch Steyr (AT) 1939 - 40
WaA623 bnz Steyr-Daimler-Puch Steyr (AT) 1940 - 45
WaA623 Radom (PL)

If I had to guess I'd wager that your barrel is probably 1939-40ish. What's the writing on the other side of the barrel say?

Thanks Claven and Student of History. On the underside of the barrel it has "168 40 BO" Should have done my homework a bit more. I was just pumped that it wasn't an RC and it might have been worth restoring to some degree. I think I might just find a cheap stock for it and hang it on the wall since I do like the markings on the barrel (not the vice marks!)

Until then it's back too the EE for a decent (complete) K98

A 98 action for 50 bucks and it HAS a barrel?

I don't think anyone got "took" in this, don't see any reason for long faces.

You have the makings of a damfine sporting rifle. The 8x57 cartridge can do (literally) anything the .30-'6 can do and it can do some of them a bit better. That is the effect of having a .323" "cork" in your brass bottle rather than a .308" "cork". North American loads for the 8x57 are wimpish in the extreme, but the Europeans load it to pretty much its full potential. Service velocity of the original 7.92x57JsS round (154-grain flatbase pointed slug) was 2880 ft/sec out of a 29-inch tube.... and at rather moderate pressures by modern standards: 47,000 psi. And that was with FLAKE powders; we have much better stuff today.

Of course, if you don't like the cartridge, lots of shops will rebarrel the critter for $375 to $450... plus taxes.

It would make a VERY nice sporter.

BTW, the Eagle over wreathed Swastika was the Reich ownership stamp. WaffenAmts are from the local Weapons Office: inspectorate markings, with the Inspectorate Detachment Number as a part of the marking. The National marking had no number and the Eagle was considerably more elaborate, as shown.

Hope this helps.

Looks to be a KAR 98a small ring action from WWI with all the markings ground off. While it's possible that it's a large ring action that's been ground down, you'll notice that the recoil lug has been thinned down too... this is typical of the 98a, and I can't see any would-be gunsmith trying to replicate it. If the barrel is stepped, it's not original... the kar 98a barrels did not have the typical mauser stepped barrel. The backsight also doesn't look correct for a 98a.

Have a look at your bolt... if the bolt knob is flat and checkered on the underside, then it's the correct bolt for a 98a.

Smellie and 9.3mauser, Thanks for all the info. I'm actually quite glad I picked this one up. I'm learning quite a bit.

9.3mauser, sorry, please explain what the recoil lug is. I searched for it on the internet but I'm still unsure. It didn't come with a bolt, but I'd like to get one.

Any ideas on what kind of Mauser bolt will work? M98? GEW98?

Please excuse my ignorance!

Cheers,

Nick

Check your 5th & 7th pictures... it's where the front guard screw screws into... on regular large ring mausers the lug is the full width of the screw hole plus a bit... yours has been thinned down to save weight.

No Luck in the EE for a Stock. Does anyone know of another website besides Marstars that would have one?

Thanks,

Nick
