I was visiting a friend who collects RCMP memrobilia and we were looking at a black and white photo of mounted police (they were actually mounted on horseback) and they all have rifles that look very much like No.4's. He said that they were indeed No.4's and that they would have RCMP cartouches on the stock if you were able to find one.

Is he right? Has anyone ever seen one? Have one?

I have never seen one, and have been trying to find one. Indeed they used them as a temporary fill in for the Ross rifle I think. When my father went through depot in the late 60 they were using the No4 to train with until stocks of the Winchester model 70 came available.

He told me that his first two posting still had the No4s in the offices before they were changed over.

I remember seeing an off-duty local Mountie with one during hunting season in 1964.

Mine is verified by Arms & Accoutrements of the Mounted Police, as well as on a sales receipt from the RCMP to Lever Arms.

Never say I didn't take time from my busy day for a LEO.

Actually, I was looking for an excuse to take the Enfields out.

Here's mine. Listed, as is Vimy Ridge's, in the Klancher book on the s/n list of known RCMP No. 4s.

As my father was a Mountie, it has some special meaning to me, and I have a copy of one of his annual ammunition requesitions for some .303 ammo (I was only a young 'un at the time, so have no recollection of the rifle in which the ammunition would have been used)

... Over the years, the 'Force has used a number of different Rifles, up to and including, although not widely distributed, the C1A1. .... "Don Klanchers'" is perhaps the most detailed and RCMP specific, book on the subject of RCMP Arms and Accoutrement's. ..... David K

There's at least one set of MP stamps out there somewhere so always be sure to check the serial number to be sure it's legit.

Had one years ago, bought it for $25.00 as that was the price to members who bought me one. Sold it for $125.00 and thought I did well, had a very sick kid and needed money.

When the No. 4s were being phased out, the ones in Frobisher Bay were offered to the members for less than $50 each. Not all sold, the rest went to non-members.
