Hey folks, question. Looking to buy a used Tikka T3 from a fellow I know... and he has sent me photos of the rifle. Looks all legit, has the TRG style barrel and thread cap/protector, the stock, etc etc.

HOWEVER, the one thing that bothers me: In the photos, the Receiver and the Barrel appear to be "silver"-ish in hue... a Matte Silver.

So I asked him: "is it just the flash, and the barrel really black? or is it silver?"

He replies with: "Yea its a matte silver colour"

I have NEVER seen a matte silver Tikka T3 TACTICAL (Tik Tac)...

Am I wrong? Is he maybe just thinking its "silver" under the light, but really its phosphate/anodized black?

EXTRA: I have the serial number of the rifle... but I have NO way of looking it up to see if it was a factory Tik Tac... any ideas how to do that?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOLKS! :)

iv never seen one , maybe confussed with the varmiter, same rifle as fa as looks but is made in stainless for sure . Unless it was a special order as I know you can get them in a blued finish

It's bead blasted like the rem 5r, so it's not a high luster finish like a polished stainless bbl

Can you post the pics

I heard rumors about these before but have never seen one, is the action black? I have a buddy who got a TRG-42 with a black action and factory stainless barrel and those weren't really advertised so it's definitely possible. Other possibility is that it's a european model supervarmint (which explains the threaded barrel). what's the barrel length? Oh and if you buy it please post pics.

That would make a HUGE amount of sense!

Anyway, posting these because you guys asked :)

Here are two pics he sent me of the action, and of the barrel. (note threaded barrel, picatinny rail etc) NOTE the colour:

Yup Derrick has this one on the ball. Not a Tikka Tactical, but the super-varmint variant with a threaded barrel. Nice find!

It would be a nice find if the price were nice... however, now that I know its a Supervarmint threaded, and not a Tik Tac, its not quite worth the price IMO.

EDIT: Silly me, forgot to THANK YOU guys for all the input and the quick responses! :)

The super varmint has a ss action and barrel, the tac has Teflon coated cm action and barrel. other than this, the two models are almost identical, counterintuitive that the Tactical would cost more when ss models typically do. the reason the tactical models cost more is possibly due to marketing on Tikka's part, some dealers are asking over 2 g's for tac's now. personally, I wouldn't pay over 1100 for that gun and only if it was in pristine condition.

Also, forgot to mention you can call stoeger Canada with that serial number. they will fill you in.

Yea, I just read that on the tikka/beretta website. Stoeger Canada huh... seems everyone is owned by someone else now! lol

As you said, with the price, I feel its not worth it in the condition its in, and the asking price. (I was initially hoping it was a Tik Tac, to replace my custom Rem 700. I wanted a tactical rifle I can hunt with as well.. TikTac was perfect, as my rem700 in the choate is too heavy... but now, well, now I will have to rethink this whole thing)

the super varmint is exactly the same as the tac, only difference is the stainless steel barrel and receiver.Personally, I'd rather have the super varmint and the threaded barrel is a rare feature in this model.

back when the supervarmints were available they were initially priced the exact same as the tactical, then beretta decided that most people are stupid and would pay more for something that had "tactical" in the name so they stopped importing the supervarmint and bumped up the price on the tac. I would prefer the supervarmint personally just because I like stainless and it's now a rarer gun. Another thing you may have not considered is that the regular varmint is the same story, now the things you lose are the threaded barrel, adjustable cheek piece, and the rail (just ask yourself if that justifies a $700 difference in retail price). All the barrels and actions come from the same place and are all of the same quality. Depending on this guys asking price first consider if you can get yourself a brand new gun for the same price or maybe even cheaper, factoring in the small amount of money it would take to have the barrel threaded and install a rail (about $70.00, prophet river).

Wise words there :) Will bear that in mind!

The tactical barrels are also chrome lined.....or at least they used to be.

I was also pretty sure the super varmint had a different twist rate than the tactical.

what year did you see chrome lining?

2009? Mine is chrome lined.

Added-I should say I'm pretty sure mine is chrome lined. It definitely looks like it. Having said that, there seems to be some debate on the subject. Beretta in the states seems to think they are, some people say they are not. I know that TRGs come in both chrome-lined, and non-chrome lined, so it may be possible that the T3 tacticals are like that too?
If they are not chrome-lined, it may just be the way they plug the bores when they phosphate them that makes it look like they are. If they are chrome-lined, I can't really think why they wouldn't advertise them as such, unless it's not a 'standard' thing (some are, some aren't).
