This year in MB, you are allowed one deer for Archery, Muzzleloader, or Rifle. For those have you that have been out bow hunting so far, just wondering what you guys are seeing so far this year. Also, how do you guys feel about the one tag this year. I have heard mumblings about it being like this next year as well. Personally, I don't mind at all. I feel there are too many dicks out there taking more than they need to, but that's just my opinion.

I don’t do archery but being that I live where I hunt, I have a good idea of what’s out here. I’ve seen does and fawns and haven’t seen any bucks as of yet. The deer are around but not like it was a few years back. Having one tag only isn’t the greatest but at least we have a season.
How many remember when we didn’t have a season at all. I can’t remember if it was in the late 70’s or early 80’s but it was closed. And then we had seasons with bucks only and some years the season was broken down to 3 days only in certain areas. So I would say we are lucky to have a season...

I'm seeing good numbers of does and fawns, but have only gotten a brief glimpse of one small buck. I just moved here last year, and I am certainly seeing more deer here than I ever did when I lived in Onterrible. If this is what you guys consider a bad year, I can't wait to see a good year!

Hah there were three deer feeding in the rich folk yards for a couple of days over here on Wellington Crescent last week.
And I saw a big dead one being attended to by police over on Provencher by Archibald.

I've voiced my thoughts on this quite a few times, but here it goes again;

I would have no problem with the restrictions if everyone had to abide by them, but that's not the case. This past summer, Manitoba Conservation restricts bag limits to one deer per licensed hunter and shortens the seasons. Three weeks ago, they open up hunting for Metis giving them the same hunting rights as First Nations; no seasons, no bag limits.
Is our deer population low? You bet. Does the government care? Evidently not.
Do I care about deer populations? I should, but I'm starting to not care as any kind of "management" would be in vain anyhow.
Can someone remind me again why I bother to follow wildlife laws???

Ive been hunting in Manitoba for about eleven years in a row now and only came across one guy named ####... but he'd rather farm than hunt, and hasnt joined us for years.
Im sure most families where the wife and one or two kids hunt, will be ok with the limits of one tag per person. Beef, hog and chicken producers will be happy too. ;)

Well put.

Will you ever hunt there again?

I have also expressed my feelings on this topic in other threads. I continue to see plenty of deer this year. I'm confident the deer population hasn't dropped and if it has it would only be by 5 or 10 percent at most. I usually harvest one deer in each hunting category and usually party hunt with my brother and father which means I can legally take five or six deer. Usually I have no problems with this and the deer population hasn't been hurt. In the 80 acres that I hunt the most, and have most of my trail cams on, I have counted up to eight different bucks of decent size(two years or older). No count on does but considering the pics, their population hasn't been hurt at all.

I can't believe Manitoban's are so stupid as to re-elect the NDP by such a large margin.......

I also appreciate bearkilr's opinions.

So there some mixed reports. We own a section of land. 200 acres of which is pasture with bush. the remainder is pretty much equal hay grounds and oats. This year I have only caught 2 does and their calves on my cameras. Last year, after rifle closed, I was catching 6-8 does on one camera. I can't say with 100% certainty that this year's population is down, but it doesn't look THAT great. At least in my area.

I completely understand the logic and thinking that is shared by some; that if metis and indians can hunt year round with out tags, why should I be punished by a 1 deer limit? And just say the hell with it and disregard the conservation laws. But I am of the thinking that if no one else will make a difference, maybe I can. That's just the way I think I guess. I have never needed meat that bad that I would starve if I didn't shoot a deer, in fact, I've only been hunting for a few years and have yet to fill a tag lol.

So to quit rambling, I will sum it up like so. If rules are set, they should apply to everyone regardless of who you are or where you come from.

I have definitely seen more immature/younger deer this year than last, especially yearlings which made it through last winter and does with fawns. If we have another mild or normal winter, the population will rebound pretty quick. The issue lies with mature deer though. A lot of the big bucks are run down after the rut and a harsh winter like 2010-2011 takes its toll on them. I think the number of mature deer, especially bucks, is definitely down a lot. That portion of the population will take some time to recuperate. Predator populations are also up (wolf and coyote).

I agree that all rules should apply evenly to all, but we could open up a whole discussion on how that's not the case, and not only in relation to hunting.

Selenger sold out all law abiding hunters for simple votes IMO...and then the Govenment wants to sell you a license and follow the rules. Whole thing is a colossal joke in the 21st Century IMO

There's not many left to enforce the rules either. The NDP has cut the wildlife branch of Conservation to the point they're incredibly understaffed. I think there are around 70 game wardens left in the entire province, hardly enough to enforce laws. More proof that they really don't care about our wildlife.

The Metis do have a season and tags. The Harvester Card lets them pick 4 of 5 tags, deer, deer, moose, elk, bear. I think the guy at work with the card said the "season" starts in July till Jan. And the Goverment announcement said that there would be an area for them to hunt in, but would be announced later.

What ever happened to the MWF standing up for our hunting rights? Oh I guess that they forgot all about them when they started stroking Chartrand and his band. I'm so pissed off with the MWF that I'd gladly pull my membership if I could. Unfortunately it's part of my gun club membership so I'll have to keep sending money to those idiots. This province needs an organization that will work for wildlife rights and not just pander to the DNR and MMF. The MWF can kiss my a** !!!! The NDP might have sold us out but our so called conservation organization rode the bus as well.

Numbers in the Spruce Woods area are way down...And I concur the Metis situation makes the new licensing a complete farce.
