best for Elk at distance 7 mm mag or 300 win mag ?

Heck, if you want to start something.... which one would be most likely to end up restricted due to having the greater ability to appear fearsome?

I recall an article by Warren Page called the Lazarus Bull. Mr Page shot a trophy bull elk with a 160 gr Nosler Partition from his 7mm Mashburn at a range that required 2' of hold over, and the bull dropped as if poleaxed. By the time the the hunter and guide arrived on the spot, the elk had arisen like the Lazarus never to be seen again. Even a expert hunter and target shot with a basement full of trophies can mess up. That doesn't suggest to me that the 7 mag or the 160 Partition is unsuitable for elk, but that human failure is always with us.

Finally a 7MM I can sink my teeth into. One Man's Wilderness is a must for everyones night stand.

Unfortunately I can't seem to kill anything with mine so I just carry it around and snap the odd photo of it in the snow.

i dont care what anyone say's you need to crank the Sh*t out of a 300WM with a huge bullet to touch a 7mags hitting power at range with a high BC 180gr. Now that berger is coming out with a 195gr with a G1 BC of .850 ... hahaha good luck your gonna need to jump to and ultra mag to touch a 7REM MAG and you wont get there till you get a 230gr or a 250 gr going 3000fps ... open your books and get your crony's out ! good luck ! welcome to the future !

You put that 195gr VLD in a 7 STW at 3000-3100fps your gonna have to go 338 edge or lapua to surpass the 7mm. If you wanna get down to numbers the 30 cal bullet is obsolete compared to the 7mm with the new high BC bullets.

I love my STW with a 30" barrel, however it can shoot well WAY beyond my "hunting rest" ability. All I need for hunting is something 400 yard and under. Unless I can find someplace to hunt where I can at least kneel for a shot!

obviously you would need optics you can dial but ... thats what harris bipods are for, you can also shoot prone of a backpack.

The trouble is that when that lil 7mm bullet finally get to where its going, its still just a light, small diameter, pill moving slowly, where as a 300 gr .338 Lapua will actually do something upon arrival. Berger's terminal performance kills paper dead, not critters, and in the velocity envelope where they are useful on game, the target is too far away for them to be useful to anyone but a hard core long range shooter, whose experience probably leads him to prefer a medium bore anyway. Besides, why use Bergers when Matrix produces an equally good bullet right here in Canada. I do have to get a copy of the new Berger loading manual though.

A high SD bullet moving faster than a very slightly larger diameter bullet with a lower SD should work better on game if you ask me....
