Hi guys, long time since I've posted so I thought I'd use this Forum. Don't want to accidentally post in the wrong forum

Long story short, I have an english made 30 06 from back in the day. It is a mauser action made by churchill arms.

I was so frustrated after taking it to poco range, I dropped it off at Italian to see if they could help the rifle.

I've had the rifle for just over a year and have been able to make a 2" group at best from a kneeling position at 100 yards.

After going hunting and of coarse seeing nothing, I took it to the range the following week. The groups were bigger and it was off. I tried shooting from a bench and kneeling. 2 boxes of ammo and 2 hours later, there was little improvement.

E 2 shots in the center and 4 inches high and then one off in the lower left field....

Maybe it's not the rifle, maybe it's me.

Is there anyone around here or a school that teaches posture and technique? preferably female? just kidding.

Thanks for the help!

You don't say if the rifle is scoped, or if you are using the irons. Could be as stated above, possibly loose mounts or loose sights. Have you tried shooting prone, with a support under the fore stock? I'm most accurate shooting prone. Have you tried different brands and/or loads of ammo? It's possible your rifle doesn't like the particular ammo you've chosen. There are lots of factors to consider, and as you've stated it could just be you. If so, you should give prone a try. Best of luck!

If you are getting 2" groups from kneeling position that is excellent, it should group much smaller from the bench. Kneeling is not the way to sight in a rifle. Use sand bags front and rear and recheck all screws etc. If you got a 2" group from the kneeling position it just has to be better from the bench, like under 1" for sure. Cheers Roscoe

Thanks for all the replies, greatly appreciated.

The Rifle is scoped, a burris 3 by 9. I asked for it to have quick release mounts on the rifle to use the iron sights. The scope is mounted tight form what I can tell. Ammo is remington core lokt 180 grain. A long time ago, I discovered the rifle grouped a slight bit better than the federal blue box. Been sticking with it since.

I realize kneeling isn't the best position. That is most likely the way I'll be hunting so I thought that would be a good way to start off the check. When I saw that I was completely off target, I benched it. That's when I felt it was grouping wrong. I used sand bags and kept it pretty much planted everytime. The very first shot of the day makes me flinch. After that, I am okay. But still, that rifle does kick and I have found myself starring to close into the scope and wore it.

It grouped fine before and sure as $hit isn't right now.

I haven't heard back from the shop, will post once they say what they think it is. This is my only hunting rifle, unless an sks counts. Kinda sucks that it's down. Better that than miss or injure an animal so I suppose it's for the better.

It's hard to explain but you're right. When I first bought the rifle, I fell in love with the loud bang and kick. I remember trying a win 300 that same day and telling myself that a 300 win mag was probably too much.

Still, there is a little bit of anticipation that screwed my mind up subliminally. I was told to relax and breathe, than shoot. I did, and wore the scope. Gripped it hard and it wouldn't shoot straight. I found a happy medium but it seemed like just as I did, hunting season would be over and I'd never shoot the poor thing for another 6 months....

I have a 22 and it has zero kick. I got it to learn and found it to be unaccurate past 50 yards. My sks is a 10 time better gun to learn with. Open sights, mild kick and a joy to shoot.

Regardless of all, the first shot is the one I always want to just pound out and get over with. after that I'm fine. All in all, it is too much gun for me and I am going to learn how to deal with myself and the rifle.

Got the gun back from the good folks at Italian Sporting Goods.

The problem was that a large screw near the floor plate came loose. Very loose. I didn't notice it. Where a normal rifle has a floor plate that pops open to release the rounds, mine has a small screw. It's a pain to remove rounds that way. Easier to cycle the bolt 3 times. Where that screw is, there is another larger screw.

Turns out it hold the action to the stock. I still was hesitant and thought it was the scope. They said it is definitely what threw the rifle out . They cleaned it all up and had it shining like new.

Of coarse while I was in there, they were nice enough to offer to help my shooting if I met them at the range some day. That was cool.

And of coarse the temptations..... I asked what rifles they could suggest for me. Bare in mind I'm a bit of a cheap ass.

I held a Tikka t3 and was in love. I love my 30 06, it's a classic. but these new rifles..... I felt like a teenager in a adult video store.

The looks, feel, balance and the ease of bringing it up to my shoulder....I just shouldered it and that was it. I didn't want to give them back. My god. Then I asked about an X bolt. Same thing, crisp trigger and nice box mag design. These new rifles are awesome. It's amazing how smooth the bolts work and feel.

I looked at the prices. Both below a g note. Not bad but still too much for me. I think I know what to save up for.

Thanks again, I will post if I still suck the next time I'm out at the range.

Maybe think about installing a limb saver recoil pad or something similar, they can make considerable difference in felt recoil.

Hopefully your problem is solved and the rifle will shoot better.
I belong to a couple ranges out in the Fraser Valley and if you still have issues, you would be welcome to join me at one of the ranges and shoot as a guest. If your problems continue send me a PM..
