another first handgun thread...

You might want to check out what Cabalas, just so you can handle a few different pistols, a friend of mine just bought a Sig p226 from them for $870, one hell of a deal. He originally wanted a CZ75 but for the extra $80 the Sig was defiantly worth it. BTW I just got 1000 rounds of .45ACP from "Canadian Ammo" for just over $340 shipped after tax, at that price its cheaper, it then 9mm. I just got a SR1911 from P&D Enterprise for $700 and I am very impressed so far with the quality of gun for the money.

I'm guessing that's with the contrast sights? Not the night sights. I went to a Cabela's thinking sh*t yeah a 226 for $870, that's an amazing deal. But then I saw it was just the contrast sights, which I hate with a passion. Or did your buddy get really lucky and get the one with night sights for that price?

Big Update

I went to Cabela's yesterday to look at a few more handguns, and got a chance to see 6 guns in this order:

1. CZ 85 Combat - $739
The first CZ I held last week was a 75B Omega, which has a slightly upswept beavertail. This one just had the regular CZ beavertail, but it was just as comfortable. Very well balanced and I loved the black finish. The ambi slide stop and safety did not get in the way, which I was scared of. I think that this gun might be the front-runner.

2. Sig P226 - $879
Very ergonomic. The shape of the grip and the control placement all felt very good, and the grip texture was about perfect. The slide was nice and big and I loved the large serrations compared to the CZ, and the gun wasn't nearly as top heavy as I expected it to be. The sights had large white dots, not sure If they were night sights. Overall quality was excellent. I hadn't really been considering this one, but after holding it I could see myself buying this gun.

3. Uberti 1873 El Patron - $629
Yes, a sigle action revolver. Very very cool. Nice checkered walnut grips and case hardening. I instantly felt like a cowboy when I picked this up. It was surprisingly well balanced with the large cylinder and 4 3/4 inch or so barrel. The grip felt great, but the trigger lock on it got in the way of my middle finger. This specific example was $629 I believe and there was a matte black one for $500. Something like this would be tons of fun.

4. Smith & Wesson M&P 45 - $769
Very good quality. It was slightly more top heavy than the Sig, of course. The grip was a bit strange, it was very long in terms of front to back, and quite narrow, but very comfortable and was grippy. The weird looking gripping serrations on the slide were very comfortable. When I gripped the slide at the very front of it, I could swivel it from side to side. Not sure if this is typical of these guns or if this one had an issue. I only looked the 45 version of this gun because the 9mm wasn't in stock, but if I were to buy this gun it would be in 9mm. Overall it felt excellent.

5. Smith & Wesson SW1911 - $1169
I needed a 1911 to look at, so I picked this one. Wow, this was easily the heaviest semi-auto. This one was all stainless steel and excellent quality. I could really get my hand up on the gun because of the extended beavertail, but I don't care for the feel of the moveable grip safety, maybe just because this one had the 'speed bump'. The grip was otherwise very good, but yet I think it was the least comfortable grip of the group. And of course, this was the best looking gun. If I would get a 1911, it would probably be a Ruger if I could find one that was made tight.

6. Browning Hi Power Mark III - $989
Super expensive considering Wholesale Sports has the Standard model for $800. Extremely smooth slide, very well balanced and it felt less substantial than the Sig. The plastic grips had an odd grove that made hitting the mag release a little tricky but of course they can be switched out. Nice black finish.

I know this is blasphemy, but looking at 6 handguns is almost too much information to take in at once. Two more guns I will try to look at are the Ruger Vaquero and a 92FS.

I owned a Sig 226 and several other 9mm.I am most accurate with my CZ Shadow and have not had one single failour with it of any kind. This is an excellent pistol for the money..

dont overlook Beretta 92 FS .
its the most acurate 9mm i have ever shot .
in my opinion way better looking than browning or CZ .
and although the grip is said to be big, and it is , still the comfort makes up for it .
also battle proven .
probably my favorite 9mm

Yes, I plan to take a look at the Beretta next chance I get, although I likely won't get it even if I like it.
I have a few family members who really like them, and I'll just mooch off of them.

Sig 226, CZ75, CZ Shadow... always liked the 92FS, never fired one. Found what I like, so I don't need any other pistols right now.

I own two Berettas, one M9 and a 92FS, excellent pistols, but SIGs are still my first choice.

My only problem with the 226 is that it's slightly more top-heavy than the CZ. I know, that's an extremely minor criticism, but whatever. I'll buy whatever floats my boat.

I take a look at the Beretta and the Ruger Vaquero the next time I'm in Winnipeg.

After my last trip several weeks ago I came to the obvious realization that most handguns today are pretty good.
