Origins of the AKs that are in Canada

I never really understood why the Prohibited status of an Semi auto AK if it were to be pinned to 5 rounds... basically they would be the same as any other Rifle in Canada that uses 7.62x39.

Because they are filthy communist guns. Also, probably made by aliens. Pagan ones.

It's for the same reason why AR15s are restricted even though they are not easily convertable to full auto. The people who make the rules are terrified of the scary militaristic guns. Probably because they have lots of experience in seeing what these guns do to governments in other countries.

Coming here from " Dear Old Blighty " ( the TRUE birthplace of "democracy" LOL ) ; Im very happy to be able to legally own and shoot the guns I have. I can see why some pple are pissed at not being able to own a handful of varieties/brands, but can you even imagine not being able to own even a bolt action 22 without being a landowner.
This country, with all of its shortcomings, is still the finest place on Earth. I go into my local gunshop and always marvel at the fact I could get out the plastic and walk out the door with more firepower than a light platoon could carry. I had autos in the Military, and yes I do miss them, but unless they were giving ammo away I wouldnt want to feed one. And except for the days we used to burn off surpus ammo, Landrover full of ammo and a dozen SA 80s and a packed lunch :):) I cant recall ever going full throttle, aimed shots is the way.
Sorry to detract, and good luck with the Autos, but I just wanted to remind pple how lucky we all are to live here and have what we have...despite the bloody politicians.

Can you imagine being so fed up shooting that you argued over who had to burn off the next 20 mags.......tax dollars at work LOL ( Pounds actually )
Even without an AK Im as happy as a hooker on payday to be Canadian and have the guns I have

And of course eveybody knows that AKs are particularly dangerous , were they not once the implement of destruction aimed at us by the Commie Hordes, and now by the most fashonable Terrorists and Gangbangers. As a sidenote, the wife, bless her, did her version of National Service in the Polish Army, and very possibly had her AK/ SKS pointed at me sometime or another LOL

Sorry about the rant :)
Over.

lol........I think you are correct..
Pretty sad that the people who make our laws and regulations do so based on how "scary" a firearm looks.

Over.

I think you misunderstood me, I fully agree they should not be fully Auto I was only referring to semi auto mode only, the same as what we have with the the SKS or CZ-858. And I also 100% agree with you we are lucky to be able to own what we have in Canada...not being able to own an AK is not really a big deal for me at all but from a technical point of view my point is if the Rifle is pinned to 5 rds and Semi only it is the same as any other Rifle.

Why not?

And

no, we are not lucky. Our current firearms laws are absolute bull****.

I do believe they are Valmut models, made in Finland. Semiauto only and non restricted due to the government giving some to some natives. Government could not turn around and prohibit something they had handed out, and sending the RCMP into the reservations to confiscate the guns would have been political suicide.

I don't know of anyone having a legit AK47, but maybe I'm wrong. At least that is what I've heard.
That sounds downright ridiculous friend. Can you imagine an RCMP officer living/working in Kimmirut, and local hunters were/are 'given' Valmets by the government?? I have several friends on Saskatchewan reserves, and not once did these 'gifted Valmets' come up in conversation.

AFAIK, the only natives (and non-native residents too) given rifles in the last several decades are those serving in the Northern Rangers, and are issued bolt action L.E. No4s. I have heard rumours of 30-30 carbines being given to northern tribes as part of treaty, but that was many years ago.

horse pucky........

I agree, I wish that our firearm laws were better.. such as I would like to see all Long Guns reclassified to non-restricted including AR's but when I say lucky I mean it could be much worse than what we have now, we could be more like Australia or Britain and (God help us) if the Liberals or NDP ever get back in to power because that is likely the way we will go.

You have to understand that it has been a relativley short period of our history that any kind of firearm was prohibited. For example when my Dad turned 18 he could have walked into a gun store, bought a full auto of any kind, bought all the ammo he could carry and walked out. No license of any kind required. The only further requirement was that within a period of time he would have needed to register it with the local police department, and before I believe 1955 no registration would have been needed. Then in the mid 70s Turdo came along and banned full autos(resulting in the first people to be grandfathered) and implemented the FAC system, Later the Red Tories and the Libtards would put us in the sh!tty situation we are in today.

So remember, we used to have freedom in this country and don't accept them taking away an inch of your freedom because it will lead to them taking a mile.

horse pucky........

My mistake, it was the only reason I had heard that gave any reason, even an improbable one, for why they are nonrestricted. Given the "mistake fixing" that has been happening recently I have a hard time believing something as terrifying as an AK would go unnoticed.

Nope, they banned everything that met the points system back in the day.

Pistol grip - check
semi-auto - check
detach mag - check
etc

Or the vz58 to prohibited status.

All this was done years ago. Prohibited by name, not by any set rules or regulations, someone decided to name them prohibited. Based on magazines, video, a check list, doesn't matter the end result was being prohibited by name in the eyes of law, not based on any set characteristics with all variants seen as the same.

The system they left in place for determining status leaves us with non-restricted vz58s, su16s, ect.

AR15s were supposed to be prohibited as well, a group saved it from being as such, so they could continue to use it for competition. There's a story to it, on here, some where.

The vz58 was likely saved from being prohibited by name back then by being unknown and if seen - called an ak47 by the uninformed who made the law.

Only reasons I can see for banning the AK:

- It's world renowned as the resistance rifle, and amongst the general public conjures up scenes of terrorism and death
- No one produces an AK variant that is semi-auto only and can not take parts required to make it full-auto (feel free to correct me on this, as I have no idea whether its true or not)
