Shorten PAL Approval Times

Oct 22 Sent RPAL application Xpresspost from AB
Oct 25 Received at Miramichi
Nov 16 Your application is now in progress...
Called in to make sure all info is complete. Not ready for interview yet.
.. does not seem bad so far.I am not in a rush anyways. In the meantime I picked up a gun range membership and been practicing. Will update as I move through the process. More time to save for my guns!

Oct 17 - Sent to Miramichi
Oct 19 - Received in Miramichi
Nov 8 - Showed up online as in progress
Nov 16 - Called for interview and my two references, license issued not even an hour after

Pretty good 29 days exactly from date it was received.

I live in Ontario. I called once when my application appeared online then twice the following week hoping to do my interviews and they finally called me today. I'm pretty surprised and grateful at how quickly the process went.

nice.

I'm still waiting for it to show up online.

Sent Nov 1
Rec'd Nov 2
Called once last week to see if they had rec'd and they said its not in the system yet. (I'm hoping this week ill see it online)

The CFC received my pal/rpal application this morning. I suppose there is a very, very slim chance I get it by Christmas. But that's just wishful thinking.

A question on the process if you don't mind. Once the CFC is finished doing the checks and interviews, does the paperwork actually move to the BC CFO ? What does the CFO actually do with it ? I'm trying to understand if this is just some sort of rubber stamping, jurisdictional red tape. Right... I'm in BC.

Thanks!

Its the RCMP's job as I understand is to do all the required checks.. gather all the information in one package and send it to the area CFO to approve. The RCMP does not hand out the approvals (unless your consider the CFO a branch of the RCMP) they just run the program and do all the back end work. They do however have the power to put the brakes on any persons application which does meet the standard for approval. Therefore the CFO would not even see your app. If the RCMP has sent your application for approval to the CFO chances are you are getting approved. As with this whole process it just means its awaiting someone to actually look at it.

I'm sure a senior member will correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for the reply hatata. That is also my understanding of what happens at the CFC/RCMP... they do the background checks, interviews etc. From there I *think* they submit their accept/reject recommendation to the BC CFO. The CFO is the one with the authority to issue the license (I believe).

I suppose my question put another way is this... Under what circumstance could the CFO reject an application if the RCMP had no issue ? Is that even knowable ?

Not that I'm worried, just curious about the process. Much of this legislation, regulation, and jurisdiction stuff related to firearms seems very convoluted and passed through one too many committees.

Not overly disappointed in the overall timeframe. Put in application for PAL/RPAL after receiving tests back in the mail. I didn't call in once to check or otherwise move it along:

10/05 - Sent registered mail
10/11 - Arrived and was officially received
10/19 - Showed up online as 'In Progress'
11/12 - Called me for Interview
11/14 - Called my References
11/14 - Showed up as "Issued" online
11/20 - Received License in Mail

Start to finish 47 days including transit time. 34 days to complete if you exclude mailings.

Not sure if it helped, but I included several pages of supplemental information, as recommended by my firearms instructor:

- Personal CSSA and Range/Pistol club Membership info
- Spouse's (Conjugal Partner's) PAL number, CSSA and Range/Pistol Club Membership info

I think the CFO can reject if they see anything in your history which they deem is a risk. Or if you are going through a nasty divorce or have a history of violence they can ultimately say no to cover their butts. The rejection rate is less than 5% a year though. I think most people who know they wont qualify do not apply. Also most criminals would not go through this process because they wouldn't care. They can get a gun on the street. They receive all the intelligence from the RCMP which includes information from CPIC, CSIS ..etc So they have a clear view of your contact with the police and your recorded mental health.

Anyone else waiting for the license in the mail? The status showed "issued" 3 weeks ago and they said it could be any day now. Seems like most of you got it within a week, guess I'll have to sit and wait here in BC.

Hell I'm still waiting for mine to even show up online. It shouldn't take 3 weeks though, but what can you really do besides wait. You could call the CFO but I doubt that would be of any help unless it needs to be re-issued.

Have you tried calling as the CFC site suggests? Please post when you receive your PAL, we'll do the same to see what the BC timeline is like.
