Anyone bought a new Savage lately?

I was at P&D today and picked my new model 14 in 250 Savage, took it home and started messing with it and clean out the bore. Couldn't believe how many patches came out real black, then some brushing with solvent and more black patches. Finally got it looking pretty good, 20 patches. Is this the norm for a brand new rifle? FS

Yep,
Bought a model 11 International Trophy Hunter in .223. Granted, its a lower end $500 package rifle but man, it looks like Savage has contracted Norinco to finish their rifles! Some years ago I bought a Savage fcxp3 package (non-accutrigger) and it was much better finished, and a cheaper version to boot. My barrel also had some pretty stubborn black gunk in it.

I just bought an Alaskan Brush Hunter in 338 Win. Accurate as hell. Everything works just fine. A couple of patches with Hoppes got the dirt out when new. All good.

I got a Savage FCX3 package rifle 2 years ago, a few patches and Hopps and it was good to go. If you want to see a dirty bore buy a Lyman muzzleloader, they put something in them for storage that is a brute to clean out. For a inexpensive rifle they sure shoot great, and I will stick with them. My .243 will put the 58g Vmax that I have loaded up for it into one ragged hole at 100 yards, and the 100g Remington bullets I have loaded go into an inch group at 100 yards. The scope that came with the rifle sits on my .22 and a Redfield Revolution is on the .243.

All Savage rifles are test fired before leaving factory.

Their bores will always have powder residue.

Always clean the bore of ANY factory rifles as dirt can migrate during transit and you have to remove the oils/rust inhibitors anyway

Bed, tune the trigger, work up some and enjoy one of the most accurate factory rigs on the market today.

FS, when did you order that rifle?

I ordered the exact same gun in April and it still hasn't made it to my local shop yet!

Mad dog
I ordered this rifle from P&D last spring when I saw that they were available from Savage, early last spring because P&D was just finnishing their booking order and Dianne ordered it right away. It would have gone through Inland Pacific the Savage Dist. for western Canada.
Funny thing was as no one from the shop phoned me and told me it was there, I found out looking on the website one day a listing for a Savage 250. I thought it was odd so I went to the shop and saw Dianne( long time friend of mine) and I said " Dianne why do you have a 250 Savage on the rack" She says I must have ordered it, I say do you recall me asking you to order it? She goes to check the back order file and there is the special order. I feel esp. lucky that I was able to buy it and that no one else across the country felt like scooping it off of their web site. So I guess mine won't be far behind it then cause my local shop was in Alberta making their order from the same place this spring.

Only good thing is that I've been bugging the crap out of Marty for 2 months now so if it does show up he'll be right on the phone to let me know it's in.

I have two Savage rifles. I'm satisfied with their performance, but I do gripe about their precision rifles having Fail-To-Feed issues because of sketchy mags... As a rifle specifically oriented torwards LEO (my 10-FLCP), that really isn't acceptable for the price... But I'm just a wannabe and a plinker, so I don't mind too much.

Gee, don't hold back with the generalizations. My Savage is one of the best shooters (shooting consistent tight groups at 300 yards) I own. I definitely would not categorize as "garbage".

Oh, they shoot fine.

They're still low grade garbage. Swing by spruce grove sometime with your rifle and I'll show you in detail why and how.

Savage rifles are garbage. Even their $2500 rifles have the same crap finish and bolt face.

Admittedly, they are 'inexpensive' and I had never really considered getting one, that is until I saw how well a couple of them in 22-250 could shoot:eek:. As a result, I picked this one up in 25-06 a while back from Bashaw Sports.

No complaints:D.

Of all my Savages', 3 of them I bought new from a store and all 3 of them took quite a few patches to get clean. No big deal, I'd rather get one that is full of oil and/or grease than one that is bone dry and has been sitting around in some warehouse with no climate control for god knows how long.

Really? Coz I actually quite like the two I have. Just sayin'......:)

And I didn't find they needed any more initial cleaning than, say, my Browning BLR. Just sayin'.....:)
