thureon defense vs JR carbine

Stopped by EPPS today. About a 85km (45min) drive. I used the wifes car and her gas.

I checked out the Thureon 9mm and the .45acp. To different animals.
The 9mm uses the 10rnd smg mag and is inserted vertically. It has a standard AR button mag release.
The .45 ACP come with a 10rnd GLOCK Mags and it is angled back towards the trigger (shooter). The mag release for the .45 is unique, reminds me of a Norgon.

There are a few things to note about the models available at Epps.
The barrels have no muzzle device and are not threaded.
It has the vented barrel shroud. There is no continuous rail on top of the shroud. Only on the Receiver. The shroud does have 2 small threaded holes at 10 / 2 / 4 / 8 O'Clock. What these are for ?? Who knows.
The octagonal forearm with the Continuous Top Piccatiny Rail (with available rail kit) does not come with these ones.
The M4 stock is a 6-pos stock, pinned with a small roll pin. Remove it and you will have a full functioning stock.

Holding the rifle in front of the magwell felt great with the .45 because it is angled back towards the shooter.
The 9mm felt ..weird because it is straight down

Grabbing the vented shroud doesn't feel right. Maybe because it is small, if it was a little thicker >? A Magpul AFG would work good here.

So I am sitting on the fence, I would have bought it if it had the Octagonal Forearm and Top Rail. But if I have to buy it as an extra....this rifle would be hitting $1200 with no sights.

Hmmmm.

I wish there was a store with a KRISS I could fondle.

Strange they didn't mention they have 9mm GA (Glock) models, they're listed on their website. You'd think they would have the rail kits to buy separately at least. Hopefully they'll be brought in at some point. Thanks for the info.

Does anyone have any range reviews of the 40 or 45 TD carbines yet?

That's quite impressive.

the jr continues to impress me, i even scoped it for fun and was getting 2" groups at 100 yards, with the red dot i was hitting the 3" gong off the sand bags at 100 yards 10 of 10 shots, takes a long time to heat the up the barrel you can shoot all day

What's the largest pistol mag that can be used in these? They don't seem to be restricted to 5 like most NR's

yes they are restricted to 5 rounds like any other semi auto rifle ....... except they are not using rifle magazines , they are using pistol magazines which are limited to 10 rounds .

the magazine restriction goes by what the magazines where built to fit , in this case they where built to fit hand guns .... and they just happen to also fit into a rifle as well .

Gotta love google

Now to source them. This thing is getting more interesting.

Is it possible to get the larger mags pinned to 10, like the rifle mags are pinned to 5?
I bought a couple of korean made glock mag clones both in 45 and 9 mil, They are 33 round mags but pinned with a pop rivet at 10 round,
I got them from canstararms
Also the G17 mag that came with my Thueron holds 17 rounds and is pinned at 10 as well.

Funny how I have been researching into 9mm AR's the past few days, and this thread pops up.

Just my luck as well the price just skyrocketed on the Thureon.

I am now considering building my own 9mm AR from scratch...

Dont be afraid to try out a JR in 9mm, they are great guns.

are the thureons available at epps the stupid looking ones with the pencil thin handguard? im looking for the octagonal handguard with rails in 9mm glock configuration.....the ones on epps website dont have any pictures

I missed that part all together. (round hand guard, now it makes sense!)

Better question is are the handguards easily changed?

Good question. See below:

Keith@TD says:
The installation of the octagonal handguard is not as easy as unthreading one and threading the other on. The octagonal may need to be machined so that the flats line up so the rails will line up with the upper receiver.

This might be something to consider for the people with the "Epps version":

Keith@TD:
This is probably the easiest way to put sights in the gun. That is the Gas Block Sight Mount and retails for $69.00. The rail section on the top of the gas block is lower than the receiver so you have to use the M4 style sights which have a higher front post.

You can order them direct, send Keith an email, he's very helpful:

Keith@TD:
The Gas Block is held onto the barrel with set screws and goes in front of the handguard. You can order them from us.

So to be clear the Epps guns have the newer round handguard/round venting shown below. (not the round handguard/slotted venting in the upper picture - although I'm pretty sure I saw Prophet River selling one of these)

Again, Keith@TD (regarding round handguards):
The round venting replaced the slotted. The threaded holes in the new style handguard are for a Laser/Tactical Light Mount. This a piece of rail 1 1/2 " long.

Lastly from Epps:

Ellwood Epps does not have exclusive distributor rights to the Thureon Defense carbines, however we do have these guns in stock. With regard to function of these firearms, our US-based exporter did test-fire three (3) examples of each calibre (9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP) to confirm their reliability. All three models passed without issue after several magazines of different ammunition types were fired through those guns. Epps is the warranty repair centre for Thureon Defence guns, therefore if you do purchase any of these models, and do happen to experience any issues with that firearm, we can service that gun on-site for you.

Regarding converting the round handguard version to octagonal:

Keith@TD:
I just got off the phone with Doug the gunsmith at Epps. And he said that he would be able to do the change and they will probably be ordering some in to do the change.

So??... Arms East got the boot?
I thought Walter was the importer? Maybe this is why he deleted posts on his TD thread and has not updated it?

There is nothing wrong with the round hand guard...if they tapped it at 12 o'clock / 6 o'clock, at the front and mid points of the rail.
Why would they tap it at 10 and 2?? Useless.
It need somewhere to put a grip or Magpul AFG. That's it. and the rifle is fine.
I know there are alot of people that want it to look like some sort of Assault Rifle. But I also need it to be functional.

You should also ask why these are not threaded or have a muzzle device. Save cost I guess.

I could always drill and tap my own holes to install some rails................................

AFAIK, Arms East is still the exclusive distributor, the warranty/repair is at Elwood Epps.

The rifles aren't threaded for muzzle devices because of export regulations. I have yet to see an explanation as to why most AR's can come in threaded from the US, yet seemingly nothing else can. If I was to guess it's because importers/exporters/manufacturers aren't willing to pay for the permits to do so. I'd love some answers on this though.

However, in this instance it wouldn't bother me because I believe TD uses a 9/16-18 muzzle break (on the 9mm at least). For example, I'd rather thread it for the standard 9mm 1/2-36, or go 1/2-28 and have a standard 5.56 AR flash hider modified for 9mm. For comparison JR uses 'modified' flash hiders and threads to 1/2-28 on their 9mm version.

How easy is it to take out the barrel? Can we thread it.

I like this. Can we put a shorter barrel in it. :)

The TD .45 ACP is the bomb. The JR .45 is junk.

I need this to work....otherwise it is $2000 for a KRISS
