Modding SKS firing pin

I forgot to clean it one time and the bolt rusted pretty bad. Even after soaking it in solvents and cleaning it really good the bolt doesn't move as freely as it used to.

Just wondering if anyone added a spring to their since the pics on murray's site look like all they did was lathe it down and put a spring on it.

K now I"m a little freaked out. I just bought my first SKS a couple weeks ago. My firing pin doesn't rattle because mine came with a spring on the end of it. Should I be removing that spring?

Leave the spring some early model came that way,
Just make sure too clean the pin and channel, before shooting.

Ah, ok, very good.

I"m militant about cleaning that thing. I took apart the bolt to make sure that channel was free and clear. Glad I did as there was still a bit of cosmoline in there. Hit it with some Frog Lube after a good polishing with a Q-Tip and solvent.

I call bullsh*t, i've been using a Murrys pin for a few years and it works great.

If you keep it clean there is no problems,I got the Murrys just to be extra safe and it was cheap.

I still shoot my SKS from the mid-eighties. Keep it clean and don't waste your money on cheap aftermarket gizmos that don't do anything.

keep it clean and if you're paranoid
put it in a drill and polish it with 400,then 600 then 800 then autosol...polishing seems to not allow the crap to stick to it so much.. i dont like to oil it too hard either try the dry lube...(hopps?)

I use a light coat of oil on mine with good results across 6 different SKS's. If you leave bare metal than be prepared to take it apart to clean it after each range trip. Oil prevents rust and you can run thousands of trouble free rounds thru the SKS without worry. But be warned about the murray's firing pin: the problem with the murray's pin is it is made of softer steel and over time it can jam in the tapered FP bore and cause slamfires, not prevent them. A clean free floating FP is way safer than a murray's pin, dont waste your time money or safety on one.

Clean is the biggest issue. The murray spring works, but it compensates for a dirty spring / bolt. I have seen videos where the lack of cleaning actually siezed the pin to the bolt, which no spring could have helped, hitting it with a hammer didn't move it. Bottom line with this system is to be super clean and most issues go away.

Thanks for the info

Any idea how to clean out the inside of the bolt where the pin goes? I cant find anything small and rigid enough to get in there to scrub?? Pipe cleaners are to bendy.

I did but it doesn't work well with the wolff trigger springs. I was getting light strikes every 2-3 rounds. Since I prefer a good trigger I removed the spring loaded firing pin,

Use a spray cleaner like brakleen, gun scrubber, G96 crud buster etc to spray the bolt out. It will get it spotless without having to scrub anything and is a whole lot faster. If it rattles, your good to go. If youre shooting surplus you will probably never have a slam fire if you clean it once in a while and dont let it rust solid.

I pulled the firing pin out of the bolt, and hosed the inside of mine with G96 Crud buster (comes with a nice tube to get right in there... Worked like a charm. Squeaky clean and the pin rattles like a baby toy now.

Takes 2 mins to do, and is super simple.

I used hot water and a ultra sonic cleaner to clean my bolt then I took the air compressure and blew it out didn't even need to take it apart did a good job.\

I don't load my firearm unless I want to shoot it so if I was really conserend about it I would simply lower the bolt by hand less likely to fire if it's stuck out. The thing is it has to be stuck out not in to slam fire.
