Regular Lead Core FMJ 7.62x39 is supposed to pierce 1/4 steel plates, steel core has even more penetration.
that's such a cheap reason for ban steel cased ammoPhoenix doesnt even allow steel cased ammo even if the round is a lead core. Reason i was given was because of the brass salvage they cant have steel cases mixed in with it all.
So I guess 30mm DU rounds are a no go at indoor ranges as well then?
I would be really surprised if you could get your hands on DU ammo.
The new manufacture Prvi, S&B, MFS (steel case) may pass the magnet test... Have never tried it however. I liked the MFS when I was plinking... don't think there is any steel other than the case.
steel core? it has a tendency to:
1) make holes in backstops
b) spark and possibly cause fires.
AND, (2. or b), take your choice) a steel core bullet is alot less likely to deform than a lead core (i.e. putting it's ballistic coefficient in the toilet) and therefore much MORE likely to result in a potentially dangerous ricochet.
It's either gonna dig in or shatter, so it won't ricochet. This was already tested at our range.
