Pistol Deer Hunt

With ref. to post #10, you will see that I wrote about his SA style, not his DA style.

But whatever style (shooting SA) he was using, he claims to be a professional (Marine), but has the safety handling aspects of an untrained child, and that is the issue!

If we condone, excuse and accept this unsafe firearms handling just because "Shame, he is handicapped", we end up with disaster and negligent shooting, death and injury. And then the non-shooters point at ALL Firearm Owners as being mentally handicapped!

Do it the right way or don't do it at all!

NOT THIS stuff AGAIN??? If you don't want to be involved in a discussion thats ok just don't!

You can call your Ranch Hand whatever you want, but it's still illegal to hunt with a handgun in Canada, as much as you'd like to convince people to think you're doing just that. ;)

Is it "illegal to hunt with a handgun in Canada"?

Here is something interesting you may not be aware of. There are some "antique handguns" in Canada that are not restricted. In Alberta there is a wildlife regulation that states it is unlawful to hunt with a "revolver or pistol" (with an exemption for gas powered pistols under 500 fps).

So our Fish & Game Association requested F&W get rid of the "revolver or pistol" regulation so that hunters could use a non-restricted antique handgun to hunt with. The Province said no and then adjusted the regulation to include antique handguns.

So in other provinces in Canada are there laws which exclude all "handguns" from hunting in their hunting regulations? If not it may be possible to hunt with a non-restricted antique handgun as we tried to get done in Alberta.

I'm aware of antique handguns and the gray areas associated with them.

While it's not explicitly prohibited federally, I'm also not aware of any province that permits handgun hunting, and as hunting is generally legislated under each province's respective Wildlife Act, the feds won't touch it and the province is reluctant as the feds don't specifically have a law either for or against it. Make sense? :D

I'm also not sure what legal difficulties a person may encounter when approached by a game warden while carrying an antique handgun. I'd suspect they're not very versed on the laws pertaining to them, and I wouldn't expect them to be. A person would have to carry some paperwork as proof, however any action would be left up to the discretion of the officer. Not worth the hassle,IMO.

So when you said that you were not exactly correct.

"I'm also not aware of any province that permits handgun hunting,"

I believe that if it is NOT allowed then it is specifically PROHIBITED. If not PROHIBITED then it is allowed.

Not worth the hassle,IMO.

For many who would like to use a handgun (antique or not) to hunt and shoot a grouse or rabbit or coyote or deer it may be worth the hassle. For gun owners in Canada it would be a small victory in the "guns/no guns" battle. As is handgun hunting with my ranch-hand, handgun.

If it was legal here I would absolutely pack a handgun of some sort while hunting. In some cases, like while dogging the bush, it would probably be the only firearm I'd carry. Safer and more convenient (both hands free) for crossing obstacles, and plenty accurate for the kind of close up fast action you run into while dogging. Then there is small game, and while center fire rifle hunting, a 22 handgun would be nice for that.
