Need a budget small game gun was looking to pick one of these up in .223

just wondering if anyone has one and what they thought about it?
or would I be better off going with the Stevens 200 in the same caliber? (a little harder to find right now, no one seems to have them listed near by)

budget is roughly around $500-$600 with optics

Any other ideas or suggestions are also appreciated!

Cheers!

I bought one in 204ruger. Very impressed with the accuracy. Not as slick of an action as a weatherby and the trigger is pretty heavy with lots of take up. I will probably put a new trigger on mine, but still very happy with it.

A Marlin X7VH in 223 slick action, sweet trigger and accurate 400-450.00 listed average price... JP.

Tagging this one to check back later. May be in the market for a Coyote gun and was thinking about the Axis. Also considering the Weatherby Vanguard Series 2.. I'll have a look at that Marlin X7, now that it's been mentioned.

My walkabout hunting rig in 7-08. Tuned the trigger and bolt so operation is much smoother and light. Feeds great. With a bit of bedding, sub MOA to 450yds which is my personal limit for this set up.

Love the squishy buttpad despite the odd look. I found the lop long so cut it down. A bit fugly but it runs and my deer tipped over very nicely.

I am going to be using this rifle for a good long time. Some pretty to be added this summer.

axis is a cheap and pretty good gun for the money, i have it in 30,06 with the stock 3-9x40 scopes and the thing has pretty good accuracy, my dad took it hunting last year and got a moose and a doe with it, he loves the gun

I liked the accuracy of the gun, can't complain there, but i had a few things i didn't care for. The bolt seems to pivet up higher and you need higher rings than normal for it to pass by the back end of your scope, which if you get a combo with a scope already mounted, the rings should work for it, but the rings i got for mine were too short. I have the accutrigger on several other rifles, and i'm now spoiled with it, i found the axis trigger way way too heavy for my liking. You can probably do some work to it to bring it down, but it is what it is. I also didn't like the stock. It's plastic, which i don't really mind for a hunting rifle, my 308 and 22 are both plastic as well, but i didn't care for the shape of the front half, it didn't seem to feel right in my hands, but that's just personal preference.
For what you pay it certainly does the job, puts lead where you point it.

Bought an axis in 223 from WWS with a scope for $250 after Christmas last year. I put a Rifle Basix trigger on it for another $105. It shoots sub MOA with my hand loads. I am happy with it, but could not stand the factory trigger for varmint hunting. It had about 7 lbs of pull with lots of creep. Had to take a bit off the stock to ensure it was free floating. I can't say they are a great value because of the work I had to do to mine, but I still like it and do not regret buying it.

I had one in 22-250 and it shot fantastic with cheap Winchester ammo. The only thing I did not like about it was the trigger weight, but as mentioned already, that can be tuned and there is also an aftermarket Timney trigger available for it, $104.95 on Timney's website. I really like the design and feel of the grip area on the stock and found it to be very comfortable to shoot.

If you want a really nice out of the box plastic fantastic, my vote goes to the Ruger American.

I am very impressed with the fit and function of mine. I did a touch be bedding work and opened up the barrel channel but that is normal for any rifle at any price point.

got to find some time to shoot it but if it behaves, this is a deal in the hunting world.

I have 2. One in 223 that I modified a lot (barrel, new stock, trigger) and another in 30-06 that will become a 308, also with a heavy barrel.

Up to a month ago I was making replacement stock for those, I am not making them anymore but I think I helped a couple of people here upgrading the Axis. Check on Mystic Precision's website for the 223 build.

Hey jeringate......I hear your cousin has a MR1 he will sell you for a good deal, that would be the perfect varmint gun for you my good Canadian friend.

i purchased a savage axis chambered in 22-250 for coyote hunting and it performs decent. Accurate but some areas seem a little cheap, the magazine clip is made of plastic and im sure under some decently cold temperatures would tend to break off. make sure you take hearing pro with you cuz these guns tend to be very loud. overall good gun for the price

Haha, my cover has been blown!
Funds just can't accommodate that coin right now or I'd of taken it in a second!
In the process of buying a new truck and trying to get a house, every penny counts!

For the money its awesome! Its a step up from the stevns, but also very accurate. My 270 is shootin MOA with factory ammo. Ive got some bergers loaded up that im going to try
