mosin nagant barrel shortening

It'd totally destroy any resale or historic value the gun would have.

In return you would brand yourself as a bozo with no respect for history or firearms in the eyes of your fellow gun Nutz, expose you to she, condemnation, and ridicule, and make you a target of the Jihad Against Bubba.

You have to much to lose. Put the hacksaw down and back away...

Worst case, and you really are the sort of person who destroys historic firearms for kicks, try to find one that somebody else has already butchered.

It's probably a $140ish rode hard milsurp. Ignore the "don't
touch it" poster. How accurate is the rifle now? 6" less barrel
could well help the accuracy.

I had a 91/30 that had no rifling left at the last few inches of the muzzle. Couldn't get 16" @ 100 yards. I cut it down to the exact length of the M38, cut the wood and redid it all to match the M38 (or M59?). I even ground the rear sight ladder to match M59 build. I now do 4" groups @ 100 yards and have collectors try to buy my "M38". Be sure to recrown the barrel properly or it will be worse than when you started. I was shooting this thing yesterday at the Port Coquitlam range and off hand shooting was consitantly hitting 24" targets @ 200 yards.
I would never sell it as such and becaus it is my own build feel closer to it than any of my other 6 Mosins.
It's yours to do with as you please.

i asked about accuracy of rifle if the barrel is cut down, i dont recall asking about historical value or any of that :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug: because i dont care, what is it with some of you guys that try and talk people out of doing what they want with their property, you like mosins so much in their original forms than why in the hell dont you buy them all and put them away in a storage locker. Your going to ridicule me for cutting the barrel...maybe on this forum but never in person i can assure you. So go jerk off to an image of a 91/30 in its pristine untouched beauty, ALL 20 million of them

Over the top but I feel your anger. Make all the changes you want, they may add value in some people's eyes.

Some of us buy rifles to enjoy them not to worry about what people think and historic reference or value

history is preserved at museums and books...

I didn't think it was over the top considering the trip some respondents tried laying on him heh

Yeah........I thought you said something about choppin the barrel.
Go for it, its your gun and theres plenty more where that one came from. Looks like it might even work out for you
My SKS has chicken:bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug: stains on it and cobwebs.....its a tool is all.

Chop the bugger and see what happens, it probably wont be any worse

Nice biteback too :)

A practical view. The thing that makes a thing valuable is scarcity. Archeologists dig through ancient rubbish heaps for treasure. A piece of broken pottery, an old bone, whatever. The RABID collectors should save all their old soup cans as someday they too will be priceless.
Mosin carbines are getting pricy, so making your own can be fun. They are light and easy to carry in the bush. I see no reason not to chop it. I see avid collectors turn their noses up at a non matching #s rifle, then cry if somebody refinishes the same. I would hesitate to chop a nice collector grade rifle but some of the mismatched refurbs, what the hell.
Chop away
Hey! Lost.. Again. I see a kings crown on that RCEME badge. Are you really that old? :)

As previously mentioned, do it right. Make sure your cut is quare to the bore and that it is properly crowned. They were originally pressure bedded so when your done shim under the barrel at the forend tip a little at a time to tune your groups in to the best it will do.

Hey, he's perfectly within his rights to molest dead puppies while watching My Little Pony, and painting his toenails to match his Capri pants, too. There are just places where mentioning you do that sort of thing is going to attract less than admiring or supportive comment.

If the barrel is in good shape to being with, you will loose some accuracy due to a shorter sight radius . Muzzle velocity will drop by about 400fps. If you put the same amount of effort into as most do, you will turn a perfectly service-able rifle into a parts gun.
