hey guys, i'm looking at buying a new hunting rifle. can't decide between the 270 and the 30-06... I want one rifle to do it all! i know 30-06 is more versatile but i've heard good things about the 270... what kind of takedown power does the 30-06 have over the 270? what range can you take down an elk or a moose at with either?

If you are not a hand loader, buy the 30-06.
If you are a hand loader, you can pretty well make the 270 equal the 30-06 in power and have a slight advantage on long range trajectory.
If it were me, I would buy old faithful, the 30-06.

takedown power is a phrase gun writers use that really means nothing. 30-06 allows you to shoot heavier bullets (165, 180, 200, 220 grain) where the 270 heaviest bullets is 150gr.

with that said the 270 has shot a lot of big game animals. However I prefer the 7mm08 over the .270 and really like the 30-06. I reccomend the 30-06 as it is very versatile.

If your a hand loader, get the 270 wsm, then you will have the best of the two.

Got them both. The 30-06 has more variety of grain weights and has great knock down power. The 270 is maxed out at 150 grains, but also has great knock down power and is a flatter running round. Many people shoot elk with the 270 and have no issues. Variety, I would go with the 30-06, much more range in bullet weights. Long range type shot, I would go with the 270 as long as a 150 weight is good enough for the game.

Not much of a difference between these 2 cartridges, especially using the premium bullets we have these days. They both have been used with great success on elk, moose, deer, bear.....

As an all around hunt anything cartridge, I'd say the 30-06 wins hands down because of bullet choice....nothing wrong with a 270 though.

Good luck winning an Elk or Moose tag in BC, next good luck if the area you win it in hasn't been logged out and isnt devoid of both critters... True story.

Btw go with the 30/06.

30/06 has nice bullet selection for anything from deer to buffalo. It will take anything in North America with regular ammo. 125 gr to 220 gr. I use the 180 gr for deer or moose. 150 or 165 gr for deer alone.
270 shoots flatter. I would use it for sheep and goats using premium bullets. If weight is an issue, the 270 may be available in a lighter rifle for mountain hunting. I would move up to premium bullets for those shots in the 270.

"Although its been said many times, many ways, Merry Christmas ---" and buy the 30-06! (ie. for the selection and availability of ammo everywhere you go!) If I could only have one rifle it would certainly be a 30-06.

Split the difference and buy a .280 Remington ....................... ;)

Actually there is so little difference in the range and killing power between the .270 and the 30-06 just buy a rifle that fits your taste.

I prefer the 30-06, but I never shot anything with a 270 that didn't go ahead and die right there. :D

BTW, one funny thing I keep finding if you are a reloader; seems everybody, including retailers, is willing to let .277 cal bullets go on the cheap. Wherever I go, I see .277 bullets in the bargain bin, typically in all sorts of useful weights. I just saw 100's, 130's and 150's at my local shop today, all on clearance. Good bullets too; the same exact ones I've used to fill the freezer with moose in the past. You just don't see that with the 30 cals...which is, of course, what I was there looking for. I've built up quite a stock of .277 bullets that were priced "too good to pass up", but I'm always short of 30 cal bullets...
