S&W M&P 15-22 Magazine question

Nonsense. It is a 10-22 that is in a shell that slight resembles an ar15 and that is only after you spend hundreds of dollars making it look like one. The function is not even remotely similar. Therefore not a variant.

The smith is a variant by looks, but it also has controls similar to an ar15, but does not function like one at all

The controls are exactly the same. You can use a Norgon Ambi-Catch and the trigger group is standard AR as well. The safety and charging handle have unique dimensions though, and there is no buffer tube.

Alright, I'm not trying to start an argument here. I'm just trying to understand our laws as I'm a newbie gun owner. I thought that any rifle regardless of it's action or looks, as long as it's overall length is 26+ inches and is a .22, that it will be non restricted. I guess it's more complicated than that..

The rules are anything but simple unfortunately, they are written and thought up by people who have no idea about anything related to firearms

Certain models are restricted or prohibited based on looks or name alone

Any Magazine designed to fit the M&P15-22 has to be pinned to 10rds as there is a pistol version of the rifle. This is the RCMP site for mag restrictions http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/bulletins/bus-ent/20110323-72-eng.htm Item #1 states this plainly. Black dog drum mags don't require pinning as they are designed for other rifles (10/22 or .22 ar-15 Conversions) and you modify the drum tower to fit the 15-22. This is perfectly fine based on #4... Ie drum is made for a 10/22 but after modification can fit a 15-22, as it's made and intended for the 10/22 it doesnt have to be pinned. I've found other mags that with modification will fit the 15-22, since these mags weren't designed for the 15-22 but for another rifle (and they still will fit the other rifles) there is no requirement to pin them.

That being said... If a police officer believes that your mags need to be pinned and wants to confiscate them (or more), you probably will have a hard time explaining that they are legal and may take a long time and a court date. Most police understand Canada's convoluted gun laws as well as most people, which is that they could easily get confused.

It's not that simple. If that were true then ALL 25 round magazines that fit the Ruger 10-22 rifle would be limited to 10 rounds because they also fit the Ruger Charger pistol. The Ruger BX-25 has to be pinned to 10 rounds, the Butler Creek 25 round mag does not have to pinned. The BX-25 is advertised & marketed to fit the pistol while the BC is not. Hence my original question. If the Plinker Tactical is not advertised and marketed to fit the S&W pistol, it should be OK without being pinned to 10.

Why modify a mag? Just get the BD Mag that was sold and made for the S&W. Site sponsors had them

Mine works great. Read the manual when swapping the tower or spend a hour of frustration like I did.

Mine showed up, went right in and has worked great. I bought the black dog mag MADE for this gun. S&W. Are you saying you bought one NOT made for the smith and Wesson, then had to modify it?

Yeah I picked it up from questar. Was for the 10/22. So you need to change the tower for it to fit the 15-22.

Does anyone have a picture of this pinned 15-22 mag for the S&W. I am curious how it is pinned.

Thanks, that appears to be just a black rivet. I was thinking about getting a 15-22 but it appears to be way more trouble than they are worth. The mags are cheap in the US at about $30 .Never seen them for sale here. I really like that AR look however. Thanks again Tom E Gun .

Your'e welcome - actually it is not a rivet, it is a very small diameter hollow split pin

I paid $15-16 each in the states. If you are looking at buying them and pinning them your self, there is an easier way...just install the orange 10 round restrictor (like the top mag in the second picture) then no pin is required. I bought 2 restrictors off eBay for a few bucks each.

There was another thread about magazines last year when the less than friendly letters from the horsemen went out to owners about magazines. If I recall correctly, somebody at that time inquired about the limiters and was told they are a no go in terms of "pinning" a magazine.

You are correct with the 10-22... I I do know it's an arbitry discision by the RCMP. I did contact the distributor of promag in canada (High Caliber Services Corp) and got this response
"Canadian Government decided they need to be limited to 10 rd, because they can be used in the pistol, we have the 10/32 mags coming in a few weeks. Dave."

I'm not saying that all magazines made for the 15-22 will be pinned to 10rds. The users here probably know more about the gun laws then the RCMP (it took 2 weeks and 3 certs to transfer my M&P15-22 because they couldnt figure out if it was suposed to be restricted and what mag capacity it was supposed to have). However, I'd go on the safe side and say that anything made for the 15-22 will be pinned unless you get it from a store unpinned, even then I'd be leary.

Also I was saying that if you look at questar's sight who imports BD drums... there are no drums for the 15-22... you would by the 10-22 or other drum mag and the tower for the 15-22. They may replace the tower for you before being sent but the BD drum is not built for the 15-22, but can easily be converted with a different tower, this is why it definatly has no restrictions.

I'll also say that the 15-22 does will fit other AR15-22 mag's with modification. As a the AR15-22 conversion mags are intended for another rifle and won't fit the 15-22 without modification they are also not limited to the 10 round capacity limit, as even after modification for the 15-22 they will still fit a regular AR15 with .22 conversion. I find that these mags even feed better then the manufactures mags

Strange. I bought mine from them. Marketed, labeled and made for the S&W 22. Absolutely no modifications required. Many others here bought then too
